Boehner to introduce one-week stopgap to stave off shutdown (Pelosi had more of a pair)

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is set to introduce a bill Monday night to fund the military through September and fund government operations for one more week, Republican sources tell The Hill.

Boehner's move is intended to prevent a government shutdown that would start after Friday without another measure to fund the government.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) said the GOP was trying to prevent a government shutdown "at all costs."

“We’re serious about trying to prevent a government shutdown. We’re also serious about cutting spending," he told reporters after a meeting of the GOP conference on Monday evening.

Boehner told GOP lawmakers attending a closed-door conference meeting that he needed “leverage” going into a meeting with President Obama and Senate Democratic leaders at the White House on Tuesday morning, a lawmaker told The Hill.

“He said he needs this (the as-of-yet-introduced bill) and the support of the conference going into that meeting at the White House, because he feels it gives him more leverage,” the source explained to The Hill.

For some reason many conservatives think it would be better to shut the Gov't down.

I don't know what they're smoking.

we all knew boehner wasn’t up to the task when he chose his old boys network instead of michele and steve.

this is likely the begining of the end of the republican party. we’d all better start thinking about a third party and an obama second term.

just remember as conservatives, we are individual creators first. we may have to go underground but we can survive to fight again. what choice do we have. throw in our children’s future. not a chance.

Oh please. 1 week makes Boehner look compassionate and still keeps the Dems on the hook.

Reality is not how it looks through the Internet-Lens, kidos.

I knew this group of Republicans in the House was going to stink when they did nothing at all for three months. They seem to be continuing the trend.

It’s probably what Obama faxed him yesterday.

Mr. Boohoo has all of us crying after seeing his feckless leadership in action. He should resign his post and let a real conservative, like Michelle Bachmann, be Speaker.

A government shutdown means a paid vacation for most government workers. I’ve never seen one yet where Congress didn’t make up the missed pay, without requiring makeup of the missed work.

I’d love to see them cut $100 billion all at once too, but if they end up doing it by cutting a few billion a week through the fall, that seems to be just as good.

What happens now doesn’t really have a major impact in the long run. To really change things we’ll need the Senate and the WH and even then the dems will still likely have at least 40 Senators so there will still be constraints.

I have HAD IT with this wimp Boehner and the weak-kneed Republicans! The RNC sent me a “Presidential Survey Letter” that I received today. They wanted to know what issue I wanted addressed, and left a blank space for me to write in. I filled it up with SPENDING! SPENDING! SPENDING. I wrote in the margin that I wasn’t going to give the RNC ONE THIN DIME until the House voted in 1 trillion of spending cuts, to take effect in 1 year. Like that would ever happen.

You got it.

Too many people here deceived into thinking a Gov't shutdown means "we win" or something.

Weird.

I wish the conversation would be more intellectual about serious matters like this. Bohner knows the dems want to shut the gov’t down so they can twist the truth to blame Republicans...the real battle is the 2012 budget and I heard budgets don’t need a Presidential signature - it can go into effect without Obummer’s approval. This is just pre-show and they are proving the point that DEMS dont’ care about cutting spending - Isn’t it about time we supported these guys instead of always criticizing them when they don’t jump up and down and fix IT ALL at once. The reality is that we are still in the minority in the senate and they need incrementally to stir the pot. It took much longer than 3 months to get our debt to this point, it will take a whole lot longer to begin to draw it down.
