A 21-year-old college student was shot Tuesday morning while driving on California 163 to class at the University of San Diego, police said.
The woman drove to campus and reported to a security guard that she felt a pain in her side. An investigation showed that she had been shot in the right rib cage. She was taken to a local hospital.
No motive or suspects have been found. Because it is a freeway incident, the case is being handled by the California Highway Patrol.
The shooting appears to have occurred around the Balboa Avenue exit of California 163 north of Mission Valley. The woman was traveling from her home in Escondido.

The 21-year-old told police that she was near Balboa Avenue when she noticed pain in her lower right torso, CHP officers said.
Even though she was in pain, she drove to the USD campus and asked for help from security guards who then called paramedics.
Emergency crews examined her and found a gunshot wound in her right side and took her to Sharp Memorial Hospital where she went into surgery.
The woman was out of surgery as of 11:45 a.m. and her prognosis for recovery appears to be good, according to the CHP.
Officers shut down SR 163 southbound from Interstate 15 to Balboa Avenue around 11 a.m. while investigators searched the highway for evidence in the case.
Traffic was backed up from the 52 interchange to Mira Mesa Boulevard as officers walked on foot searching for shell casings or any evidence indicating where the shot may have come from.
They expect the highway closure to last two to four hours.
The bullet entered the woman's car through the rear passenger side door, police said.
A CHP investigator examined the vehicle on the USD campus before it was towed off the property.
There are no other witnesses and no 911 calls related to this shooting, according to the CHP.

That’s some velocity on that round, to go through the door and part of either the front pax or driver’s seat and penetrate the abdomen from, I have to assume, at least 150 yards away.

Sad...a Navy vet. Probably off his rocker. Hope he gets the care he needs, preferably behind bars.
