Authorities investigating the shooting of a University of San Diego student as she drove south Tuesday morning on state Route 163 found about 10 bullet casings that may be linked to the incident.
All southbound lanes of Route 163 between Interstate 15 and Balboa Avenue were closed from 10:40 a.m. to 1:55 p.m. as officers fanned out across the lanes searching for evidence. At one point, traffic was backed up to Carroll Canyon Road, the CHP said.
The casings were found about 12:30 p.m. just south of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol said.
The 21-year-old woman was on her way to school and was in the fast lane heading south near Balboa Avenue about 7 a.m. when she felt a pain in her side, CHP Officer Allen Reyes said.
She drove to the university in Linda Vista where she asked an attendant at the main gate for help, Reyes said.
Police and an ambulance were called and the woman was taken to a hospital where she underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the right rear of her torso. Her prognosis is good, Reyes said.
A bullet hole was found in a rear passenger side door of her silver 2006 Toyota Matrix, officials said.
San Diego police determined that the gunshot occurred on the freeway due to the trajectory of the bullet and where the entry hole was found, the CHP said.
The injured woman is a senior majoring in political science, according to an email sent to all USD students by Vice President of Student Affairs Carmen M. Vazquez.
Tragic incidents such as this can be very unsettling, Vazquez wrote. She said students who wanted to talk to someone about the incident should go to the campus Counseling Center.
Vazquez asked students to keep the woman in their thoughts and prayers. She also encouraged everyone on campus to attend the 12:15 p.m. daily Mass at the Founders Chapel to pray for the students recovery.
Good thing California has very strict gun laws or someone could have been seriously injured or shot like 10 times.

Or they could have just been random casings from any of the other shootings that take place on the Freeways these days?
We may never know, but I wonder ... (seeing as I am become increasingly paranoid these days ...),
Could a budding Sarah Palin type have been warned ?
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Was she shot on the freeway, or somewhere else, and said it was on the freeway?
Presumably it was a handgun bullet that travelled a distance, passed through her passenger car door while she was traveling at least 70mph on the freeway leaving a perfectly round hole in the door(and not slewed because of the travel of the car), and then into her.
Possible, though the bullet would lose a LOT of energy in the process.
The story just sounds a little off to me, that’s all.
Looks like a FOD Walk.
Exactly what I thought when I first glanced at it!
