Federal Workers Union Sues White House Over Possible Government Shutdown

With time running out for congressional leaders to reach a budget deal, the country's biggest federal workers union is taking the Obama administration to court for what it called a failure to explain how federal programs and services would be affected if there's a government shutdown.

The American Federation of Government Employees announced Tuesday that it filed a lawsuit in federal court last week seeking details on the shutdown plans of federal agencies.

The union's national president, John Gage, said he filed the lawsuit after the White House Office of Management and Budget failed to respond to a Freedom of Information Act request sent early last month.

Gage said public unions have been given very little information on how agencies would determine which employees are essential in the event of a government shutdown.

"It's not something that should be cavalierly handled," Gage said in a written statement. "If a shutdown goes on, there will be federal employees who are going to be hurt financially. They should know before the eve of a shutdown what is happening and it should be done orderly and not in a last-minute rush."

For the first time in my adult life, I think America has become a great big ****in’ disgrace! What a joke!

For the first time in my life I’m ashamed of this country. This angers my 89yo German mother. She says I don’t know how bad it can get.

I can answer their question...how about the same number of workers needed on MLK’s Birthday, Presidents Day, and Veterans Day. With a little arm twisting we could reduce this number by 50%...geez?

Yep. Whoever came up with the idea to allow government workers to unionize was an epic idiot.

Fire ALL Federal workers, ban unionization from public service positions forever, and rehire essential personnel from people who actually want to work for an honest day’s pay. At this point, I rather have a bunch of unemployed, hungry recent college grads running the government than the entrenched thugs we’ve got there now.

Funny you should say that. Earlier today I was thinking, “Put a fork in America, she’s done.”

I really want to be optimistic but am all but sure that our best days are behind us.

So the government workers will be hurt financially. Obviously that’s the main union concern, not the delivery of services to citizens.
I certainly don’t feel sorry for government workers that feel financial hardship since nearly all of us non-government works have experienced financial hardship for over two years. Where is it written that government workers are a protected class?

The saddest part of the whole mess is that many of the maggots and morons now living in this country actually WANT America destroyed. It’s so unreal to me.

Shut down the government for a month and see if anyone who produces notices. The only thing they will notice is that they can continue growing the USA without the hassle of the various government drones and losers bothering them.

Hey, “unessentials”.......go pound sand!

Are these same union a-holes concerned about Americans who have been hurt financially because of our governments actions on behalf of these poor union employees??

Many of these maggots and morons have never experienced true sacrifice and hardship. They have no historical reference to appreciate how good they have it now and the sacrifices that were made that ensured they would have it as good as they do. War is something that is on television that they protest while sipping on a latte’. If more money is needed you simply print it. Do whatever feels good, love everyone, don’t judge or be a hater. When is the next party and who won American Idol? Don’t bother me with defects or terrorism. Let’s vote for him because he’s cool.

I’m 34, far from an old fart and I can see it. A lost generation that is facilitating their own demise.

At least I’ve got a fighting chance because I see it coming and have lived on far less. I just fear for my son and the piss poor situation that the baby boomers and Generation X’ers are laying at his feet.

Fire ALL Federal workers,

Well, thanks for your support. I am one of those federal workers. I help keep the B-1B Lancer flying. I have done so for the past 22 years. Prior to that I was an Air Force flying officer for 15 years. So I have been sucking at the government teat for 37 years. I could be making twice as much working for a contractor, but I would feel a little guilty getting that pay for the same work.

P.S. I am emergency essential. I will work even if it is possible without pay. Did that when Clinton shut down the government. We did get paid, but unlike the nonessential workers we did not get an extra week paid vacation. I am not complaining, but those are the facts.
