Homosexual men are to be allowed to give blood for the first time, in a move which will increase fears of transfustion patients contracting HIV.

The ban on gay men donating blood is being lifted because it was decided that the rule could be discriminatory and might breach equality legislation.

There are estimated to be 86,500 people with HIV in Britain, with a quarter unaware that they have an infection. About 42% of people infected with HIV in 2009 were homosexual men, according to the Terrence Higgins Trust, the HIV charity.

Homosexual men are also at risk of passing on other sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis.

High risk group is pretty self explanatory. Risk yourself, not others.

Sounds expensive ,money to pay blood collecters, money to test it and then money to dispose of it. A really dumb idea.

“This has led some health authorities to say that HIV-infected organs should be available for transplant, primarily for patients infected with the virus but also potentially for some who are not.”

Unbelievable.

Its only a matter of time before they start doing the same here. While its another example of PC run amok, the “honesty” of the donor should never be trusted anway. If some homosexual wants to lie, there is nothing to stop him from giving blood. Hopefully, they have the good sense to screen the blood before using it.

This sounds like a really good idea.

After all, “equality legislation” is way more important than the extra cost and danger of allowing the highest risk group for HIV to contribute to the blood supply.

Well, with that line of thinking, folks with cancer should be allowed to donate as well as with hepatitis, syphillis, and ANY other infectious disease!

We wouldn’t want to OFFEND OR DISCRIMINATE against anyone, would we?

OMG!!!

Do you really believe that gays are trying to spread HIV to everyone on purpose? Or is it the government that has that intent?

According to the article, 7% of gay men are already giving blood despite the ban. "Misery loves company"--they apparently want HIV to become prevalent among heterosexuals too. If they do adopt this rule, there are bound to be many donors who lie about no sexual activity for 10 years.

Maybe a reasonable compromise would be to allow them to give blood, but then throw the blood away. Like (one hopes) was done when Yasser Arafat was photographed giving blood.

This old quote is either from the French Revolution or from Napoleon: "To make an omelette, you must break some eggs."

They want to build a utopian society in which all perverted sex acts are normalized and acceptable. If that means that millions more must die from easily preventable disease [shrug] I guess we'll just have to live with it.

A Day of Reckoning will come for these people.

...being lifted because it was decided that the rule could be discriminatory and might breach equality legislation

We are now paying the price for the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. We can all agree that the type of discrimination against blacks was wrong and rightfully were eliminated.

The problem is they have carried the anti-discrimination mantra way too far.

Not all discrimination is bad. Survival requires each of us to be aware of our surroundings and to make choices which may in fact result in us discriminating against another individual or group of individuals.

Allowing a high risk group to give blood that may carry a non-curable disease just to be "fair" is insane.

I am beginning to think the entire United Kingdom is insane (or at least those that are leading them).

There is already a push to do the same here and I will not be surprised when it does. Where ever the UK goes the USA follows shortly thereafter.

You:”The ban on gay men donating blood is being lifted because there is interest in spreading HIV to everyone.”

Me: So called do-gooders and anti-discriminatorians have always given me this sense that they would have something like you wrote done in order to achieve social justice and what they see as full complete equality among individuals or should I say among people as they tend to see humanity as one large mass rather then as separate individuals. So in their world view, if one group has a deadly illness, everyone should be inflicted with that illness for the sake of equality and social justice. Only thing that stops them is that those who are mentally and physically healthy aren’t lining up to help them fulfill their insane and immoral goals. Really I think there are people who, if they were in control, would mandate that everyone has to be subjected to the same perversions, cruelties, illness and such of the world, that some people are subjected to, in order for everyone to be equal. They would prefer this, rather than to accept that no one is the same, everyone is different and what bad thing that happens to one should not happen to everyone and nor should what good thing that happens happen to everyone. aaaaah! I can’t even think of this anymore it’s insanity to think everyone belongs in the same shoe....
