I lived in Britain - the Brits love sunshine, hence their visits to Costa Brava, the Greek Islands etc. I think the visits to dubai are just for the sun, though I don't think the beaches compare to the mediterranean.

I have no idea why anyone would visit Dubai except for the shopping (which, since I loathe any kind of shopping has no allures for me)

Oman is different though — a real Medieval place and I daresay it has soul.

Smart move.

There are many, many better places to go for sun and beaches and skylines.

I've never been a big fan of Dubai, but I've known people who just love the place for some reason.

don’t forget that the UAE was one of only 3 countries that recognised the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and sent weapons. The other two were our other “allies”: Pakistan and Saudiarabia

Funny thing about Dubai was when I was planning my trip to New Zealand, I was looking at Emeriates Airline but besides being out of the way to get there, I had this thing of not wanting to go through the Middle East through an islamic country.

Well, the resorts along the beach are nice. The gulf water is hot, very salty and great for the skin. Most resorts have several pools, restaurants, spas and fitness centers with great service so it’s a nice resort destination. October - March are the best times to visit.

ok, I haven't added in -- I'm not a beach person either, more a mountains guy or history nut. So dubai has nothing to offer me personally

But, why go from the UK to Dubai? Is it cheaper than Spain or Tunisia or Greece?

Why does the US not become energy independent and stop making these filthy bastards wealthy?

Well, I guess between nuclear-phobia, and not drilling in ANWR nor the gulf, nor off the coast of CA, and the non-viability of wind and solar even when subsidized, and spending billions of dollars on uneconomic conversion of corn to fuel, I don't know how it possibly *could* become energy independent. Incidentally, there are presently ZERO radiation deaths from Fukushima ... but about 10,000 deaths from inhalation of coal particulates EVERY YEAR, in AMERICA ONLY. About 100,000 per year across the globe. Fear of nuclear power is going to kill us (with some small assistance by a bunch of Muslims who want to kill us, and were made wealthy and therefore able to do so, thanks to our idiotic and suicidal energy policies).

This will be my 20th year in the Middle East, the last 3 here in Dubai.

A visitor might find it soulless. Living here gives you a better understanding and I’ve come to realize there are a lot worse places to live.

There are Coronas here.

The Mexican drug cartels in arent’t here in Dubai. Unless Mexico has gotten a lot better, I find nothing else valid about your post.

For most Brits (and most other Expats) its the tax break and job market.

There are about 250,000 Brits here and many are happy to be here.

I have to agree with that...I live in one of those "worse" places. ;-)

I was in Camp Victory 2 weeks ago and will be back up the 2nd week in May. At least I have a wet CHU there.

For me, Kandahar is worse than Camp Victory because of the sewage pond almost in the middle of the camp.

Stay safe :)

The abu dubu cops aside for the moment, I have seen and heard drunk Brits on holiday, and I can understand the urge to beat them senseless, if not necessarily lifeless.

I highly doubt it’s cheaper than Spain, Tunisia or Greece. It does have a certain clientele of aspiring deal makers and entrepreneurs consistent with Dubai’s goal of becoming the middle east’s business hub. I liked it since it was 1-hop from Baghdad for an R&R.

true, but why the ordinary tourists? Ah, well, I can't understand folks who just like glamour. Give me old jeans and good walking shoes and a hotel in Rome, London, Prague, Paris, Vienna, Torun, Krakow, Wilno, Riga, Stockholm, Brugge, Antwerp, Venice or Oporta and I'm happy :)

Well, dang, I wish I'd known. I'd have bought you a coffee at Green Beans. I am currently working on VBC. :)

The second week of May is when I slip the surly bonds of Iraq and head back to the USA for a while. :-D <----bigger smile.
