A volunteer fireman died fighting a rural fire in southern Eastland County on Friday afternoon.
Gregory M. Simmons, 51, was an Eastland volunteer fireman for 11 years, the Eastland Fire Department said.
The fire began near Kokomo and moved toward Gorman. The fire was not contained as of early Friday evening. Five fires began shortly after noon Friday, and the county said numerous fires remained out of control there.
Simmons was with the Sachse Fire Department for 10 years before moving to Eastland, the department said.

Greg was incredible, loving man who would not only give you the shirt off his back he would also show up the next day and wash it for you.
please keep his wife Carrie Gayle and his two daughters in your thoughts and prayers.
What we have gathered so far is that he and 8 others were trapped. I do not know the condition of the others but that they survived. He was overcome by smoke, fell into a ditch and was consumed by the fire.
RIP. Condolences to you and your family.
Prayers up.

Prayers for your family’s loss! I heard about it today via Facebook. We have had a watertruck ready to go all day in case it gets to our ranch. They closed the schools early in several of the nearby towns here. Still, so shocked to find out there was loss of life with this one. Incredibly sad. Condolences to his wife and daughters.
May our Heavenly Father comfort all who love Greg Simmons.
Prayers for you and the family.
I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. All firemen are heroes, but the volunteer guys...special people to rural people.
From what I heard on the news, the fire is moving at an incredibly fast pace due to the insane winds we had today.
