Authorities shoot dog during probation search in Boulder Creek
Santa Cruz Sentinel ^ | 04/14/2011 | Stephen Baxter

A sheriff's deputy shot a bull terrier puppy to death when the dog rushed out of a front door and barked during a probation search on Thursday in Boulder Creek, authorities said.

About 11:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Anchor Court, two deputies knocked on the door of 48-year-old Lonni Locatelli, who was on probation for a meth-related conviction, said Sgt. Dan Campos. Loud knocking alerted Locatelli's two dogs, a 12-pound, 5-month-old female bull terrier named Sheeba and a 2-year-old pit bull mix, Locatelli said.

The dogs barked. Locatelli was in the shower, and he heard the knocking and barking and answered the door.

As he opened the door, the dogs ran to a waist-high retaining wall above the walkway, Locatelli said. One of the deputies reached for his pepper spray and fired it at Sheeba, said Sgt. Dan Campos.

The deputy then pulled out a gun and shot the dog once, Campos said. The deputy prepared to shoot the other dog, but his partner told him to stop, Locatelli said.

"She was just barking, she never hurt anybody," Locatelli said. "I couldn't even believe it."

Periodically I see reports about LEO’s shooting the household pets. I have come to believe that what is happening is an a kind of de-weaponizing of the home by excitable, on edge officers. This officer was disarming the household.

First they came for the guns, and I did nothing.

Then they came for the dogs....

And yes, I chose the term LEO rather than Officer of the Peace, or Police Officer for a reason. I have the feeling that some of these people get into the business to simply play gotcha or to excersice power over others. Bad eggs.

What is it with these cops? Why have they turned dog murderers? They are as bad as Vick.

Actually it was a “Bull Terrier” - like Patton had. And from the weight, it may have even been a Miniature Bully : / From all accounts I have heard, they are total clowns and sweethearts.

Hope the link works. It is to a picture of two 6 month old pups, to give us all an idea of what the officer was up against....

May God rest that little soul, and may He bring comfort to the owner.

I’m starting to think that the only way to stop this is with a campaign of public ridicule. If it’s OK to label sex offenders and drunks, why not these trigger-happy, jumpy police? Why not publish their pictures in the paper? I think that the citizenry needs some warning concerning these dangerous armed thugs with obvious mental problems. If you can’t fire them, can they be forced to drive pink police cars and wear pink uniforms?

You will notice that this generally happens in either a big city or by “sheriff’s deputies” in rural areas. Generally, these people can remain anonymous fairly easily. Can you imagine what would happen if this happened in a small to medium sized town? The whole family would be run out of it. I wouldn’t want to be the parents, wife, or child of such “men”...and I use the term loosely. I can tell you that life would be pretty rugged for the family of a “man” who shoots 12-pound dogs where I grew up.

There are those who say that they are “justified”. Do you think they walked up to this house with cut-offs and polo shirts? I think that a bulletproof vest, Kevlar gloves/sleeves and steel-toed boots would stand up pretty well to the worst that a 12-pound puppy could dish out.

Since lowering the qualifications to become a LEO it is apparent that the people sworn today are more thug than anything else. How many more times will the public be victimized by these thugs before something is done?

I am no fan of drug dealers, OK? But try to read here. He was on PROBATION for a “meth-related conviction”. It doesn’t say anywhere that he was a meth dealer or a guy who was cooking the stuff up. Probation means he did not serve time and he would be on “parole”, not probation. He is more likely just a poor dumb sad sack user who was caught in possession of an amount which could not be construed as “intent to distribute”. If he had been convicted of these more serious charges, he would have spent time incarcerated and the paroled, not put on probation, OK?

There just practicing for when the United Nations edict that animals have the same rights as humans goes into effect.

Then they can turn their fire on people without consequence.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's office went into the crapper under Mark Tracy. It apparently has not recovered.

sure

the whole system worked perfectly here

from the bright & shiny detectives who busted him in the first place

to the standup D.A. who hauled him into court to the public defender who put his heart and soul into the case

to the rock-ribbed conservative judge who sagely determined to give this otherwise respectable “meth-related” gentleman a second chance

to his PO who strived valiantly to keep him in line

to the kids who tried the crank but didn’t get addicted and managed to grow up fine and become soldiers and doctors and ministers

to their parents who saw that everything was just a big case of misunderstanding

to the meth-related gentleman himself who was a lover of puppies and who some rat-fink informer wrongly fingered

which caused these filthy dog-hating bloodthirsty lawmen to blow in there and eff up the whole sparkling enterprise

OK

I’d love to be on the jury if the guy shot back.

This isn’t “law enforcement” - anyone of us do this and we would be looking at a laundry list of charges - if the Government enforcers didn’t shoot us first.

This Government enforcer needs THE EXACT SAME CHARGES we would get. 3 strikes in one day.

This is one of the most egregious examples of poor training, bad judgement, and immaturity that I’ve seen in quite a while.

You've just described the majority of cops.

It’s ridiculous, but the average gun-owning housewife seems to have much better fire discipline than the average cop.

Has anyone other than a damn cop shot a barking dog at the dog’s own residence? If everybody acted like these a-holes nobody would have a dog in their house. They’d all be dead.

Are cops psychos? What the hell is the matter with them?
