Germany to Hungary: New constitution breaches EU values (Bans Abortion, Protects Marriage)

Germany has warned the conservative Hungarian government that its new constitution, passed by parliament on Monday (18 April), is not compatible with European Union values.

"We are observing the developments in Hungary with great attention and some worry," German deputy foreign minister Werner Hoyer said in an emailed statement. "The media law adopted at the start of the year shows an attitude towards fundamental rights which - despite some amendments - is hardly compatible with European Union values."

...The Hungarian parliament approved the document 262 votes to 44, with the Socialist and green parties boycotting the vote and the far-right Jobbik voting against it....

The European Commission for its part has washed its hands of the matter, telling EUobserver that the constitution is for Hungarians to decide and that the country remains a constitutional democracy....

The new text, heavy with references to Christianity, protects the life of a foetus "from conception" and preserves "the institution of marriage between man and woman".

Germany may legally correct (as they were with respect to the anti-Jewish laws passed in the 1930’s). That does not make them right.

No wonder Our Lord loved agricultural metaphors!

Don’t mix the two. Germany in this case is telling the official EU position, nothing to do with the Jews. In this case the Hungarians begged EU to let them in and agreed to everything, hardly the same could be said about the Jews in WWII. All Hungary has to do is leave EU, no is stopping them from doing so.

Curious creature this new Hungarian government. They seem to embrace traditional social values, and yet had no qualms about helping themselves to the contents of everyone’s 401K.

They don't call them Christian Socialists for nothing. Coming soon to America if a Mike Huckabee-type gets elected.

I see no sign the members of the ruling party are Christian socialists.

I always thought the EU was a bad idea. You cannot weld that many countries with that many different histories and values into one conglomerate without having serious problems.

Will Germany launch a blitzkrieg against Catholic Hungary like they did against Catholic Poland?

Good for Hungary! Glad not all of Europe is sold out to self-destruction. We’ll need pockets of sanity as the financial slide into the abyss begins.

I promise, I am not confusing Kristalnacht (sp?) with the current Hungarian situation. Perhaps I should have put a little smiley on my post.

The criticism is specifically about the new media law. Apparently, there is going to be a new government agency overseeing all news production in tv, radio, print, and the internet, which is supposed to make sure that the reporting is properly “balanced” and “factually correct,” and which has the power to issue heavy fines for what it perceives as breaches of fair coverage.

Apparently, they are having a liberal media problem that they are trying to solve in this way. But you know how these things work out…how would you like a bunch of Obama-appointed government henchmen overseeing the media, sending everybody from Fox News to Jim Thompson big bills whenever they don’t like what they see?

“...shows an attitude towards fundamental rights which - despite some amendments - is hardly compatible with European Union values.”

Because protecting the “right” to murder innocent infants is SUCH a “value”...

God Bless Hungary. Throwing off the last clinging Fecal remains of the communists and asserting their rightful place in Christendom again.

Lord, help them and guide them, and PROTECT them - or give them the will and the means to protect themselves.
