Also kind of puzzling why one of the perps turned herself in and squealed on her partner-in-crime.

The way I read it, a third person came back and told the police the identities of the "perps" as one of them seemed to have told her what she had just done.

A person looking to receive gender reassignment surgery must live as the other sex for one year before qualifying for the surgery. they would legally become the other sex and a police report would not refer to them as the old sex.

this is my understanding anyway.

Said more reason for punishment, as in the crime itself was heinous in-and-of-itself and then add beating someone for being who they are, for existing is another strike against them. (I am not talking hate crime). Kind of piles things on to the situation.

Subtle point, perhaps not stated clearly, but getting into an argument and then beating someone is bad, but just to beat someone for what they are, is rather cheap and cowardly.
