Security forces in Syria have shot dead at least nine people at funerals for anti-government protesters killed on Friday, reports say.
They opened fire on mourners gathering in parts of the capital Damascus and near the flash-point southern town of Deraa, witnesses said.
At least 72 people reportedly died on Friday, the bloodiest day in some five weeks of unrest.
Two MPs from Deraa have resigned in protest at the violence.
Friday's bloodshed, which came a day after President Bashar al-Assad scrapped decades of emergency rule, drew strong international condemnation.
At least 280 people are now believed to have been killed since unrest erupted in the middle of last month.

Now Assad is actually mowing down civilians with Chinese-like ferocity, and all the WH can do is issue a “strong condemnation.”
I guess this grotesque hypocrisy must be related to the fact that getting rid of the Syrian regime would actually be in the US’s strategic interest, and hence not a real priority for this contemptible marxist scumbag of a president.
Syria is one of 0’s “my people” and an enemy of Israel so they can do as they please without the expanded, new and improved, “no fly zone” interference.
Like we really need more allies like this.
bttt
Muslims killing Muslims is far preferable to the usual news about Muslims killing Christians.
SOB. If you try and post this on facebook you get title:
“Syria protesters bury their dead”
and you don’t get the picture of the guy being dragged, you get a picture of angry protesters that appears nowhere on the page.
I still suspect Christians in Syria have it better under Assad, then they will once the “protesters” take over.
It appears the countries which have helped the West in the war on terror are the ones being thrown under the bus - Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Yemen,
The ones aiding and abetting terrorism are invisible to the WH - Iran, Syria, Palestine, - or is it just my imagination??
McCain will fly over there to help the Freedom Fighters...soon as he finishes in Libya.
I wouldn’t put it past him Ernie.
Hey, they were dressed for a funeral, get off the backs of that long-suffering dictatorial regime. Gosh.
