EDITORIAL: Global-warming zealots to ban ice makers
Washington Times ^ | Saturday, April 23, 2011 | By THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Ice makers are the latest target in the left’s ongoing war against the conveniences of modern life. Earlier this month, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) issued a report that may condemn this essential household item to the contraband list that already includes functional light bulbs, toilets, washing machines and showerheads.

Those looking for an easy way to cool down their drinks with ice cubes are guilty of increasing their refrigerator’s energy consumption by about 12 to 20 percent. That’s unacceptable to global-warming alarmists at the Department of Energy (DOE) who are hard at work finalizing regulatory standards for the fridge. The proposed changes will increase prices by an estimated $2 billion per year, but DOE justifies this added expense by claiming consumers would save $37 in electricity costs over the lifetime of a typical side-by-side.

Paying more up front to obtain paltry energy savings might appeal to some consumers. Others struggling to make ends meet might not see it as such a bargain. Liberals, however, have no interest in letting the public decide what types of products suit their particular needs. Dishonest bureaucrats impose their one-size-fits-all choice on Americans while simultaneously denying they regulate consumer behavior or ban items like light bulbs, showerheads and refrigerators. “I’m pro-choice on bulbs,” claimed Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency Kathleen Hogan in congressional testimony last month. “I really do not believe that the appliance standards end up restricting personal choice.”

Yet the likes of Ms. Hogan pull popular products off store shelves and replace them with inferior - but government-sanctioned - products. They do so by forcing appliance manufacturers to file statements confirming that their products meet every aspect of the regulations, that the products have been tested according to government rules and that the manufacturer “is aware of

What do they use in Bangladesh?

That's what we will be using if these anti-American fanatics get their way.

It's only fair....

People this utterly stupid should never be permitted to procreate, further polluting the gene pool.

Let them all go off and live in a log cabin in the woods. No electricity, running water, toilet, etc. But wait, would they not be contributing to global warming by using a chainsaw to cut down the trees to make their cabin? Give them a Swiss Army knife and tell them to have at it. Oh and by the way, you cannot use wood to heat your cabin or cook your food, because it contributes to global warming.

Better yet, just go jump off a bridge or cliff somewhere and save the planet your carbon footprint.

I always wonder why these types of people don't join VHEMT. If you haven't heard of it before, you won't believe what you read.

“Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency Kathleen Hogan”

Deputy Assistant...so she is the assistant to the assistant...why exactly does the assistant need an assistant? Or, for that matter, why does the Secretary for Energy Efficiency need an assistant? And exactly why do we need a Secretary for Energy Efficiency anyway? Seems like we could create some financial efficiency by eliminating some redundant, useless positions here.....

This is an excellent case of the Government telling its citizen what to buy and use. Where is the freedom to choose?

This is clearly unConstitutional!!!

That is not the goal here. An authoritarian, dictatorial government is the real goal.

The other tactic — they’ll just tax and regulate the heck out of it and make it so that we can’t afford it.

Boiling the frog.....

.....Wait until DOE finds air conditioning use unacceptable, no matter how energy efficient they are.

There is no such thing as "green".

Environmentalism and "saving the earth" is a slippery sloped movement that pits relative "green-ness" against competing thoughts. No matter how "green" you think your scheme is, there is one that is more "green". In the end, the only "green solution" is to wipe humanity from the face of the earth. There are those out there who believe this and they are leaders in the green movement. It is a carrot and stick approach to taking society down.
