The States With The Worst Income Inequality
24/7 Wall Street ^ | 04/21/2011 | Douglas A. McIntyre & Charles B. Stockdale

There was never any chance that in America income would be distributed like it was supposedly done in the Soviet Union – to each according to his ability and his needs. If capitalism is the key to the rise of the US economy, then the concept that some people can be richer than others is near the heart of the system. Americans worship self-made billionaires such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffett because they believe that it’s possible for them to be that wealthy too.

Unfortunately, there are far more poor people than wealthy ones. America is the world’s most visible case of that. A small number of people in the US control most of the income, wealth, and property. More than one in eight people live below the poverty level and that number has grown recently. No matter what the government has done to bridge the difference between the groups, it has been ineffective, and that situation is not likely to change given the current tax laws. The wealthy have a higher tax rate, but even what they keep after taxes is far in excess of what most other Americans have.

---SNIP---
The Marxian ideal is a “zero,” and a state in which one group possesses all the wealth and another has none would be “one.” The state in which the inequality is greatest in America, New York, is 0.5. Global statistics show that in come countries, the figure is as high as 0.7.

I care about my net worth, not the ratio of Mr. Bill’s net worth to mine. If increasing that ratio improves my net worth, what’s not like?

Equal Income = Unfair Economics

I prefer fairness and freedom over equality and tyranny.

Quick, import a few million more third-worlders.

Why do you think they won't close the borders?

Why do you think they are quietly doing other things that you won't hear about in the media - like:

They recently closed down Brunswick Naval Air Base in Maine - right after they build hundreds of top of the line new duplexes that were to be base housing for enlisted.

Right. Guess who's going to be living in them...after they get through with brand new renovations?

2,600 Somalis.

You think these people will be self-sufficient? Do you think they will either bother or be inclined to assimilate when they are being give a totally separated community all to themselves? It will more likely become a little Muslim town within the town of Brunswick.

Why didn't they, instead, let these homes become rentals to the general public? Maine has a huge shortage of rentals. Why not let working citizens live there?

The area has already suffered a huge blow from the closing of the base. And just where does the federal gov't get the right to impose this on a state arbitrarily? Why wouldn't the community and the state at least have some say? Oh, right, the Feds own the base. And the community and the state get to pick up the tab.

I'm glad I don't live nearby - but I used to visit the base regularly when my daughter's family lived here (hubby/pilot) - and Brunswick was a beautiful town/area - with a reknowned college, Bowdoin.

Prayers for Brunswick.

There is a logical explanation for widening of the income gap, and “blame” for it falls squarely on the left.

When I was a kid, a male lawyer would typically be married to a woman who stayed home with their children. Today, he is more likely to be married to another lawyer, also with a substantial income. This phenomenon of two high powered salaries has widened the gap with single-parent homes.

Most of the “poor” are in single parent households. If they werent, many of them would not be “poor.” And whose policies gave us all these single-parent homes?

These people need to stop whining and take responsibility for the mess they created with the welfare state.

BTW, regarding my post #25 and the forced influx of 2,600 somalis imminent> The 2010 census at just over 21,000.

With the recent closing of Brunswick Naval Air Station, that number may even be lower now. And they are trying to overcome the blow from the closing of the base.

So a sudden onslaught of 2,600 (that's over a 12% immediate onslaught) of ANY group would be a big impact. But such a number that will move into free housing and be on welfare???

Most of the poor are living on government handouts...they have no motivation to work and improve their situations.

8. Georgia 7. Florida 6. Mississippi 5. Alabama 4. Louisiana 3. Texas

These states are hardly Democratic dumps but they do all have one thing in common.

Freee-dame wrote: Karl Marx actually said “From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.”

..... a famous quotation indeed. What I have never seen, however, is any explanation by Herr Marx of just exactly who is to decide what any particular citizen’s abilities are worth or what his “needs” might be.

The complete moral emptiness of such a concept is so huge as to be impossible to ignore.

The liberal answer is for everyone to be poor. no rich = income inequality and all the power to the govt

Having bicycled around in the USSR (back when it was still the USSR) I can tell you there were some folks with money (nice weekend dachas on the river, etc.)... it's just that those people were all government workers/cronies. Everyone else was dirt poor. They even had different stores with imported cigarettes and other goods that only government people were allowed to shop in.

Hmmm...

Did they, on average, earn twice as much as their 'civilian' counterpart?

I honestly don't care about the "poor" so much as I worry about the working poor....those who are really trying and every turn of the road, the govt pushes them down...

in the grand scheme of things, there can only be so many bosses for so many workers...the vast majority of us HAVE TO BE the workers....

the govt want to square things up a bit?....how about eliminate some of he ridiculous taxes that we face...how about stopping the cheap flow of illegals taking over jobs......how about instead of paying for illegals to have the best healthcare and education, the govt spend more on its own tax paying citizens...

“Aside from self-destructive behaviors, the lower class has a better lifestyle than the middle class.”

So, in reality the “lower” class is the “middle” class economically and vice versa, right?

“Just remember Tennessee is back-woods and nobody in their right mind should come here.”
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I am well aware of that but nonetheless I am considering a move to Tennessee to get away from the poverty, disease, misery, snakes, alligators, coyotes, bears, black widows, brown recluses, alcoholism, diabetes, depression and general all around disaster in South Carolina.
