The XM2010 sniper rifle is making a name for itself in Afghanistan. Officials won’t say how many are there or where they are. But at the time of the Sept. 20 contract, officials said the first 250 rifles would be ready by early December and sent directly to Afghanistan.

Whatever they are, they’re fairly ugly looking.

It looks kind of like a HiLift jack...

The M2010 is a refurbished M24 Sniper Weapon System. The M24 design used a Remington 700 long action so it could fire either the 7.62 NATO or be upgraded to .300 Winchester Magnum. This capability was built into the M24 at the beginning of its service life.

The “new” M2010 is a product improved M24 that incorporates lessons learned in Iraq and Afghanistan. The M2010 should be very successful for Army snipers.

They are 300’s.

A fine caliber.

My Elk rifle is chambered in 300 Win Mag.

My longest shot afield was at 600 yards, and it was very strong upon arrival.

I like scout rifles, this is a economical (AKA cheap) one I built up years ago from a 90 dollar buy. FN K-98 the Israelis had rebarreled to 7.62 NATO back in the 1960s. I shoot cast boolits almost exclusively, and it is very accurate with such.

The MN 7.62x54 at link was a $25.00 pickup, it came pre-bubbarized, so just slapped a cheek piece, scout mount and scope on and left be. It too is accurate with cast boolits and makes for a great knockabout truck gun.

My M1A is far more accurate than the fella pulling the trigger.

Sir, welcome to Free Republic!

That is a fine site and I need to study it a little. Well done.

Doesn’t the .300 Win Mag have the same energy at 1,000 yards out as a .357 Magnum at point blank range? I seem to recall reading that somewhere. Now that’s a big hitter!

Now, now, don't get all carried away. I luv muy HiLift jack!

I pulled my old Blazer out of a rather deep mud hole/high center with one. Slow, but unstoppable. It WILL work.

You ever see a REALLY good competitive shooter with a bolt gun?

Bolt gun competitors like to joke that they prefer bolt actions because they can cycle the action as fast as they want. A semi-auto or self-loading action is slower, because they have to wait for the action.

And for some shootists, that’s the truth.

Most people who shoot Walmart grade bolt guns (eg, the Rem 700 action) have no idea just what the potential of a bolt gun could be.

Depends on the bullet. You need a bullet with a high Bc to retain energy downrange. Pick the wrong bullet, and most all the energy from the hottest rifle round will be gone after less than 1,000 yards.

Here’s an example of what I’m talking about:

The rifle is a STR-200 by Sauer.

Here’s more examples of guys who can cycle bolts fast:

I don’t know about 20 seconds, but I saw range instructors at Parris Island pump a clip from an M-1 into a 20 inch target at 600 yards - all in the bullseye - STANDING.

The range, at that time, was still marked out at 1,000 yards, although we never fired beyond 500 yards.

Posted by Travis elsewhere:

Michael Bane (The Outdoor Channel, gun writer, all-around great guy and Uber Outdoorsman) is reporting this:

“Did you guys know that Dave Lauck out at D&L Sports actually did the Cooper Challenge — 20 rounds inside of 20 inches in 20 seconds at 1000 yards? First guy to succeed.

“He was shooting one of his custom ARs with his gas system and muzzle brake, with 77 grain bullets...

“Congrats Dave, and WHAT AN ACHIEVEMENT!

.300 Win Mag is a damn awesome round! They seem to be inherently accurate, even from an out of the box cheap hunting rifle.

Probably why the Navy match teams worked with them extensively since the 1970s. The result was the Navy M84, now developed into the Mark 13 Mod 5 rifle in .300 Win Mag.

Press release: ATK subsidiary Federal Cartridge Co. in Anoka, MN received a $49.9 million firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity contract for .300 Winchester magnum ammunition. Maximum quantity is 80,100 boxes of 480 rounds each, minimum is 117 boxes. This ammunition will be used by U.S. forces engaged in combat, and by the US Navy in Match Team competition.

300 Winchester offers longer range, better accuracy, and more hitting power than standard NATO 7.62×51 mm rounds. The MK248 MOD 1 cartridge grew out of the .300 Winchester Magnum Product Improvement Program…

I have one of Malcomb Coopers AI rifles in 300 Win mag I purchased at great cost to my then poor NCO pay scale fed savings. It had been cut for a custom 300 Win Mag load that is longer than standard. Rounds were made for it by Sandia Die & Cartridge in Albuquerque, NM. Not sure if the company is still there.

Sandia headstamp on their loading. Was made for DOD and had a DODIC assigned. I had a USMC Unertl 10X on it and it shot better than anyone in my unit could make it if that makes sense. Changed its optics to a 16X Leupold Mk 4 Ultra from their custom shop later on as Marine Gunsmith made me a accurate copy of the M40A1 so the Unertl had to go on that. HAD to.....:o)

Bought 3 cases of the ammo out of pocket and was given lots more by uncle sugar. The rounds will not chamber in my other 300 Win Mags due it’s OAL.

Accuracy International rifle I own is a treasure and well made. Hope the quality is still there for those interested in one. Can’t say enough good things about the one I purchased.

Stay safe Archy !!!

Your’e talking about Bruce who lives in the canyon and walks his big ol’ dogs on 66.

He’s been slowed down by a stroke, but still gets around.

Saw him in the grocery store in 4 Hills not too long ago.

Yep...that’s him, in the old stone house on the north side of 40.... Damn sorry to hear about the stroke.

He had some kind of ultra uber hand made french ammo loading machine that was spewing out super accurate handload quality ammo at hundred a minute or more. You ever see it in person or know what it was ????
