I know, I know, if you can’t blog anything real nice it’s better not to blog at all, that’s my advice. Nevertheless:
Personally, I would have liked bin Laden’s death to have been announced by whatever lowest-level official was manning the night desk at the Department of Nondescript Bureaucrats, preferably reading it off the back of an envelope. But, if you’re going to put the head of state on TV to announce it himself, it would have been better to have been all brisk and businesslike – “At 0800 hours American military assets entered an address at 27b Jihadist Gardens, etc” – and finish off with a bit of Churchillian sober uplift about it not being the end or the beginning of the end but maybe the end of the beginning.
Instead, as Stephen Hunter, the novelist and Washington Post film critic, writes:
Any joy one might feel in the intelligence of our analysts and the bravery of our door kickers was significantly diminished by Obama’s malignant narcissism. The first part of the announcement, evoking 9/11, was vulgarly overwritten as per Obama’s view of himself as some kind of gifted orator. The adjective bloated compote was unworthy of the subject, banal and self-indulgent.
I was, I confess, a little stunned by the first part of the President’s speech. It was, as Mr Hunter says, overwritten. It managed to be both overwrought and generic – all that telepromptered overload about cloudless Tuesday mornings was not only tackily over-prettified but came over as unfelt and hand-me-down, like a course exercise in some third-rate creative-writing school’s Soaring Oratory class. Or, at any rate, as if they’d loaded up a first draft of September’s tenth anniversary speech into the machine. The official announcement was delayed for all this? If ever there was a moment for the commander-in-chief to be real, plainspoken and off his glassy-eyed follow-the-bouncing-ball routine, this was it. It’s as if nobody around him knows how to write except in the one tinny key.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m happy to rally round the flag, and rally round the President, but rally round this speech? No thanks.
The way Zer0 delivered the speech, he actually looked pi$$ed about it to me.
The real story here is that this is one of the first times Zer0 turned the troops loose to do what they do best, in contrast to the nine murdered on post because they were not allowed to be armed and rules of engagement that daily endangers our troops. No, the military won this round in spite of Obama, not because of him.
I yelled at the TV “We don’t need a history lesson!”
Anybody over 10 was there.
I think I’d have gone with adjective-bloated compost.
The link to Eureferendum is a good article posted by Richard this date. I’m with him on his suspicions. This OBL announcement is all too packaged, but with the similar Obama loose ends as his history from the COLB to his school records, etc.
I too am considerably suspicious of last nights announcement with apparently staged supporters outside the WH according to CBS news, and the fact there wasn’t any “chatter” on the usual internet sites the Jihadi’s use, and that also per CBS news last night.
I wait to see. I can’t just accept the word of a serial Liar In Chief as Obama is by his track record.
(see Mighty Mouse)
Well he’s got the ears for it.
Sweet, very sweet. I think it's fairly obvious that this whole thing is faked for political purposes, but to go the extra step and surmise that it now gives OBL carte blanche to retire somewhere without further worry about anyone stalking him is perfect. And perfectly obvious, or should be, but it wasn't for me. Somehow the audacity of that final conclusion was extreme enough to elude my detectors, leaving me, once again, rueful over my naivete'.
But ever since the Clintons slipped and slided onto the national stage, I've repeatedly experienced my inability to think low enough. Having a Muslim in the White House practicing taqquiya just further extends the problem.
Muslims live total war. They live it, eat it, breathe it, and literally pray it five times a day (look up what their ritual prayers actually say, sometime, for an eye-opener). Bush prosecuted the war in Iraq far more fiercely and efficiently than his handlers wanted him to, and for that he deserves genuine praise. In contrast, I always thought the worst things he did to America was the Patriot Act and protecting illegal Mexicans. But in retrospect, the invention of the myth of the "moderate" Muslim will, I believe, come to be shown by history as the most catastrophic meme ever to hit America, and in that, Obama and Hillary and the rest of the Rats are only using what Bush originally set up and empowered. God protect us all - America and the rest of the world - from "moderate" Muslims, who are quietly unlocking the door for murderers in the middle of the night, while smiling during the day.
Anyway, great analysis, Candor7, and thanks for posting it.
Hi Jeff
I agree totally. I watched this last night and couldn't believe that he couldn't memorize prepared remarks for a 10 minutes speech. He was so obviously reading that when he stumbled over the words, he had to go back and re-read them. There was no...fire, no nothing. It was like he had been ordered by his teacher/parent to say something nice about someone/something he didn't want to.
It was a ridiculous display of verbosity and banality. No wonder I tune out his speeches.
I'm still glad the terrorist is toast!
here we go again. more conspiracy..
first we had 911 truthers, then birthers and now : deathers...
Or more precisely, "I conclude Bin Laden was not killed May 1st 2011 EST."
Can someone flip out flight computer and help me solve this math problem.
1. Two modified MH-60 flew from Afghanistan to Abbottabad undetected by PAF. It is at least 200 miles flight as crow flies, probably more to evade PAF. Range of MH-60 is 450 miles at cruise speed. More extra fuel means less load.
2. One MH-60 had mechanical defect and had to be destroyed.
3. Second MH-60 flew back to Afghanistan with OBL corpse.
4.Total numbe of JSCOC unknown. Min. number of crew for both choppers: 4, probably 6
6. "Ride" for one team was destroyed. They either used other MH-60 to return to Afghanistan or were extracted by SAR
Math problem: how to fit two JSOC teams, two flight crews, corpse, extra fuel in one MH-60 and fly at maximum range of 450 miles or more.
{there is a version of the story that MH-60 flew from Ghazi Air Base in Pakistan, but it contradicts the rest of the claims about clandestine mission evading PAF with hi-tech wizardry and hauling corpse back to Afghanistan)
Mrs. Thrawl was just aghast that the Idiot in Chief is so incompetent he needed a speech to announce that OBL was dead. And that it took one hour to write that speech.
There were people saying that the President looked “Presidential” last night. I thought he looked like a smarmy bad actor reading a 1st time screen writers over-wrought final act “President’s Speech” in an action movie. Pathetic.
And the goons on the left lap it up like the trained pets they are.
“biggest knplll”
mel, ya got me on this one!
I said to my brother, and obama’s (ptui) glassy-eyed look confirmed to me that it took the boy-king’s handlers that long to sober him up enough to set him in front of the teleprompter for yet another self-aggrandizing oration.
I was getting nauseated listening to all the “I, me, my, mine” spewing forth from his festering gob. I left the room after the first 5 minutes.
I second that.
"I'm glad you're dead."
It didn’t take an hour to write it. They were waiting for Celebrity Apprentice to be on to screw the Donald some more.
It looked that way to me. Man, that crowd developed awfully fast, especially way past midnight on a Sunday night.
Also, consider the moves made late last week moving Panetta into SECDEF and Petraeus into CIA director, concurrent with Obama's wide-ranging travels to launch his re-election campaign.
Then, today, he and Moo-shell appear in a pre-arranged OPRAH segment.
Wow, huh? Oh, btw, if Petraeus is not the commander in the 'stan anymore, then who is...? And what were U.S. ground forces doing in Paki? My mind was and is flooded with questions...
>> It was, as Mr Hunter says, overwritten.
Indeed bombastic, but nonetheless balanced by the cataleptic conclusion.
The root of compote is the French word compost. Steyn makes me think of Bill Buckley, quite a wordsmith.
