Mark Steyn: The President’s Speech
NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE ^ | May 02, 2011 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 05/02/2011 1:25:51 PM PDT by neverdem

I know, I know, if you can’t blog anything real nice it’s better not to blog at all, that’s my advice. Nevertheless:

Personally, I would have liked bin Laden’s death to have been announced by whatever lowest-level official was manning the night desk at the Department of Nondescript Bureaucrats, preferably reading it off the back of an envelope. But, if you’re going to put the head of state on TV to announce it himself, it would have been better to have been all brisk and businesslike – “At 0800 hours American military assets entered an address at 27b Jihadist Gardens, etc” – and finish off with a bit of Churchillian sober uplift about it not being the end or the beginning of the end but maybe the end of the beginning.

Instead, as Stephen Hunter, the novelist and Washington Post film critic, writes:

Any joy one might feel in the intelligence of our analysts and the bravery of our door kickers was significantly diminished by Obama’s malignant narcissism. The first part of the announcement, evoking 9/11, was vulgarly overwritten as per Obama’s view of himself as some kind of gifted orator. The adjective bloated compote was unworthy of the subject, banal and self-indulgent.

I was, I confess, a little stunned by the first part of the President’s speech. It was, as Mr Hunter says, overwritten. It managed to be both overwrought and generic – all that telepromptered overload about cloudless Tuesday mornings was not only tackily over-prettified but came over as unfelt and hand-me-down, like a course exercise in some third-rate creative-writing school’s Soaring Oratory class. Or, at any rate, as if they’d loaded up a first draft of September’s tenth anniversary speech into the machine. The official announcement was delayed for all this? If ever there was a moment for the commander-in-chief to be real, plainspoken and off his glassy-eyed follow-the-bouncing-ball routine, this was it. It’s as if nobody around him knows how to write except in the one tinny key.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m happy to rally round the flag, and rally round the President, but rally round this speech? No thanks.

I have a bucket list.
Not a list of place I would like to travel to, since the new 5 page application for a passport will not allow me to do that. I have no idea where my moterh lived one year before she married my father. There is no family member alive I could even ask. As for a complete list of all the places I have lived or worked, all my supervisors & the phone numbers——cannot possibly happen. OUR ‘phone number” on the farm growing up was various rings on the crank phone.....I think it was “2 longs and 1 short”. There were 20 people on that particular line.

I do have a list of people I would like to have a nice day & a dinner with.
Mark is on that list. He hits a home run every time he writes something.

Thanks for the link, Candor7.

If this was a sham, and not the real deal, I think the SEALS will let the cat out of the bag.

Bwaaaa! These days, I’m never sure if something like that is a typo, or some sort of internet shorthand for something that I’m too old, and too dense, to understand! But that was a good one!

Congratulations Navy Seals and all support troops.

Amen. They are the best the world has ever seen. What they pulled off in this mission should leave our enemies quaking in fear. It's such an insult to read posts that say the Navy Seals and Delta Force are lying and covering up for this administration, and that this mission never happened.

Even the Seals may not know. They may think it a clean kill and are wondering after the fact what happened, because of what was done with the body remains.....dumped before it was hardly cold..under the guise of “Muslim rites?” What a laugh.Obama has back door ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and others.

The grift, IMHO, was organized from the Pakistani End.

The body had to disappear fast to make it work.
I do not believe a thing that Obama says without independent verification. Also the body should have gone to our NATO allies for their own verification, they too spent millions trying to hunt OBL down, but they did not get so much as a nod, even after towing the Obama line in Libya.

Its more than passing strange ti see what happened when in military circles, the ID would have been slow, methodical, and irrefutable.Instead we have this campaign shill.

Obama is worse than most imagine, and we will see a lot more before the usurper is done with America.

No sham. You could not get five SEALs to engage in some bizarro conspiracy like this. In a year we’ll know the name of the guy who capped OBL, he’ll be on TV trying to sell a book about it, hoping to land a gig on TV as a “security expert,” AKA for the rest of his life, “The Most Famous SEAL Ever, the Man Who Shot Osama Bin Ladin.”

I am glad to see that at least some of us are thinking analytcally.

You make very cogent logistic points, and they too point to this being a Paki assisted scam. I doubt that Seal Team 6 even knew of it, but I bet they have suspicions now. They thought it was a clean kill, but it was as dirty as hell IMHO.The body had to disappear quickly for the scam to work.
That bidy should have never been dumped s quickly. It should have been handed over to our NAT allies for their independent verification. They too spent millions hunting for OBL.But they did not even get a nod, even after towing the Obama line in Libya.Very strange.

I am not implicating the Seals, I am saying the whole scam was organized through Obamas back door comtacts with t he Muslim Brotherhood, and it was set up from within Pakistan. The Seals got the false intel and acted thinking it a clean kill.I bet they have a lot of questions now after the body was dumped so quickly.I know NATO does.

You make a lot of points, but almost all have holes.

Fuel: Many MH-60R's have aerial refueling capability. This was almost certainly needed and used.

Two ships: I have seen no full account of all assets used; there were at least three ships, as one back-up took the load of the crippled one.

Total number of JSCOC unknown: I saw a version that stated 24 sets of boots. Normal troop load of MH-60R is 11; this would mean three ships, plus at least one back-up.

Ghazi Air Base: Highly unlikely; arrival of a bunch of spooky Seals would cause great stir and arouse questions....possibility of target alerted and moving too great.

So, we’re watching the cat fight on The Donald and NBC scrolls that The Present is going to make a statement. That’s it, no details. Late on a Sunday night that scared the bejesus out of the Mrs. and I. That frickin’ narcacistic POS. Then NBC breaks in with “Special Report”. I have not seen that since I was a kid and it was ALWAYS bad news. God forgive me I hate that man with a burning passion.

That line came from a writer whom Mark Steyn was quoting ... but I’m sure he could have come up with it himself.

I missed the whole thing; can’t stand listening to Zero at any hour.

I get attacks of attention deficit disorder when he speaks. It's either leftist baloney or narcissistic drivel.

I planned to listen to this last one, I started listening but then I remembered a very important chore I needed to do in the other room, and when I went back, it was over. I have now forgotten what that chore was but I remember it was VERY important. :D
