Working on my boat at Bair Island and heard the explosion about five minutes ago. Looked up and saw the smoke and thought, from the direction, it was a boat at Dock Town so we went to investigate. Turns out to be the cement plant at the Port of Redwood City. Lots of black smoke and flames visible from more than a mile away. Lots of sirens immediately.

What exactly can burn in crushed rock? Are you sure it isn’t a volcano?
To: Average Al
Fire also burning on Catalina Island, off the coast of LA.
It’s HOT out there today!
To: Beaten Valve
It’s 68°F in Redwood City.

"What exactly can burn in crushed rock? Are you sure it isnt a volcano?" According to Beaten Valve's photo in #9, it appears to be a paving batch plant. Looks like an asphalt fire to me.
Asphalt can outgas methane and light hydrocarbons, which are explosive.
