There is increasing concern in Washington that Jay Carney, the new White House Press Secretary, isnt up to the job. Even when faced with an innocuous question that requires only that he trot out the official line, he looks completely stunned, as if the questioner is Bob Woodward asking him about Deep Throat. He gathers himself, embarks on a stuttering reply, pauses for what seems like an eternity, then starts gabbling, tripping over his words, rephrasing what hes just said, then looking plaintively back at the questioner as if to say, How did I do? Was that okay? Or would you like me to try again?
I think hes doing very badly, says a political contact based in Washington. And Ive heard others say that hes really struggling.
This is a pivotal moment in Barack Obamas presidency, a moment when the eyes of the world are locked on Washington. In the global battle for hearts and minds, it is essential that the leader of the free world exudes an air of calm authority at this time. Yet the White Houses handling of the media in the aftermath of Sundays events has been breathtakingly amateurish, planting seeds of doubt about the legality of the operation and about Osama bin Ladens death that would not otherwise be there. The constantly changing narrative or fact pattern, as one White House official described it suggests that the president and his advisers have been caught on the hop and have no clear strategy for dealing with the fallout from bin Ladens death. This is epitomised by the halting, timid delivery of Jay Howm I doin? Carney, who must bear some of the responsibility for this communications failure. . . .

Obama’s press secretary has to be the highest paying job that nobody wants.
If you are even remotely qualified for the job, you would rather juggle deadly cobras and live squid in a laundromat than take it.
You almost want to feel sorry for the guy...
almost...
It’s really hard to answer questions when you know you are either lying or the truth is about to change on you.
Night and day when comparing Snow or Ari Fleischer (my personal favorite) to this cast of clowns.
A kinetically fake but accurate fact pattern comes out of the White House every day.
Maybe Jay has an actual conscience and is really struggling to be a lying sack of sh** like Gibbs was.
ROTFLOL!! That’s going in my ‘FReeper Keeper’ file right now!
The reason he’s floundering is that in his previous jobs, he’s been allowed, even encouraged, to take notes as he interviews and prepares for his stories.
In this job, he is forbidden to take notes as Obama’s handlers are telling him what to say, so there won’t be any notes to be subpoenaed later.
You try remembering, without notes, 15 to 30 minutes of lies you didn’t originate, and telling them to the world as you are being recorded. That’s a butt-load of pressure.
So what else is new.
Exactly and the guy knows precisely what lies are being told.
That's Jay's problem. One handler tells him to say this and another handler tells him to say that instead.
I know that isn't much of a tie-in to the thread, but I thought a bad excuse to post a hot pic is better than none!
I’d have a hard time always having to lie for someone else.
Dana is a Rovette.
Yea I have to agree with you. Is it possible the man may, to the Democrats dismay, actually have a conscience? Could it be that the constant lying and manipulation is actually bothering him?
What’s the old expression, Garbage In, Garbage Out?
Something went really wrong during the OBL compound raid. It sounds like OBL was already dead when they found him. Hence all the spin, fake photos, no real body, no video, video blackout, no show at ground zero from Bush or Clinton, no definitive story line, etc.
The WH press corps is focused on maintaining the party line. They barely blink when the story changes. They just start reporting the latest version of the “facts”.
The Clowns may change, but the Circus will remain the same...
