A Snapshot of the American Jewish Electorate: 2011 Political Survey [Not a Poll]
Hebrew Union College, Los Angeles ^ | May 3, 2001 | Steven Windmuller, Ph. D.

This political survey was intended to provide a snapshot of Jewish voters. It offers some interesting insights into the depth and intensity of Jewish political engagement, but by the nature of this study it does not permit one to make any defining conclusions.

Further, the findings confirm that from this particular cohort (some 2300 participants), Jews hold deeply embedded policy positions on key domestic and international issues. In this particular study one finds a distinctive Jewish conservative voice emerging on Israel related matters and an array of domestic social issues. [Bold added for emphasis by poster.] The data also suggests that among highly engaged Jews, those who are active within Jewish religious and communal life, there is a sharp divide on political attitudes and policies. This liberal-conservative split models the current political landscape of the country. The intensity of this political and social disconnect could also be seen in the additional comments offered by many participants to this survey... These messages in many ways confirmed the findings of Frank Luntz and others who have written about the growing presence of angry American voters. The focus of many of these commentaries negatively depicted the "other" voting group (namely, liberals offering viewpoints on conservatives or conservatives providing comments about liberals).

Sometimes I think that if Yasser Arafat ran as a Democrat, he’d get 90% of the Jewish vote. I’m pretty sure it’s not even worth discussing the conservative or Republican Jewish vote. I’ve been hopeful before, but like Charlie Brown and Lucy, disappointed every time.

My understanding is that religiously observant Jews, esp. Orthodox, are FAR more conservative than the “Secular” Jews that are Jewish by heritage, but haven’t likely set foot in a Temple in 30 years.

I think the problem is two-fold. First, you have the “minority” component, and then you have the (incorrect) notion that the Nazis were right wing, and therefore, Republicans who are also right wing are obviosuly close to Nazis.

It's now all down to handouts. Since they now can vote themselves perks at the cost of working taxpayers the system is absolutely going to collapse.

Obama could order beheadings of Jews on live TV.

90% of the Jewish sheep to the slaughter will still fund and vote for the anti-semite democrats and their Czar/President.

Sounds to me like nothing much has changed. The slavish devotion to DemocRATS (read Obama) by the Jewish voters astounds me.

The last Republican to win the Jewish vote was Harding in 1920 with 43% in a three way race. The next best showing was 39% for Reagan in 1980.

There are sectors of the American Jewish community who have always been conservative; especially Hasidim and the more fully committed Orthodox.

Lamenting this phenomonon one evening, I finally got some Jewish Conservative guy here at FR to explain it to me at long last - something about their Eastern European history or something. It almost made sense at the time, but only if I adopted the unspoken proviso that these people are just incredibly stupid when it comes to politics, as are the Blacks.

When I assign any brain cells to the conundrum at all, they keep coming up with some sort of poorly formulated insight having to do with a lemming-like tribal mindset. Can’t figure it out, really - just another enigmatic mental disorder with a hopeless prognosis.

.... the (incorrect) notion that the Nazis were right wing,

Drives ya nuts, doesn't it? It's due to 1930's "anti-fascist" propaganda originating in the Soviet Union. The sad fact of the matter, which I advise you to never bring up in polite conversation if you ever want to eat lunch in this town again, is that the membership of the CPUSA was heavily Jewish. And damn few quit when Hitler and Stalin signed their non-Aggression Pact!

Go figure.

“Secular Jews”

Can that be considered an oxymoron? (ABsolutely baffling)

There are sectors of the American Jewish community who have always been conservative

Yes, I'm aware of that but was unaware of how many liberal Jews there were until the last election. It is not in the best interest of Israel to vote for liberals but that seems to be an unimportant issue to the liberal Jewish Americans.

I'm a conservative Baptist man, raised from childhood to believe that those who bless Israel will be blessed by God and those who curse Israel may expect to be accursed of God. Liberals do not have the best interest of Israel at heart, to say the least.
