A Snapshot of the American Jewish Electorate: 2011 Political Survey [Not a Poll]
Hebrew Union College, Los Angeles ^ | May 3, 2001 | Steven Windmuller, Ph. D.

This political survey was intended to provide a snapshot of Jewish voters. It offers some interesting insights into the depth and intensity of Jewish political engagement, but by the nature of this study it does not permit one to make any defining conclusions.

Further, the findings confirm that from this particular cohort (some 2300 participants), Jews hold deeply embedded policy positions on key domestic and international issues. In this particular study one finds a distinctive Jewish conservative voice emerging on Israel related matters and an array of domestic social issues. [Bold added for emphasis by poster.] The data also suggests that among highly engaged Jews, those who are active within Jewish religious and communal life, there is a sharp divide on political attitudes and policies. This liberal-conservative split models the current political landscape of the country. The intensity of this political and social disconnect could also be seen in the additional comments offered by many participants to this survey... These messages in many ways confirmed the findings of Frank Luntz and others who have written about the growing presence of angry American voters. The focus of many of these commentaries negatively depicted the "other" voting group (namely, liberals offering viewpoints on conservatives or conservatives providing comments about liberals).

All of my Jewish relatives voted for The One in 2008. Not one will again in 2012. It is a big change.

I still don’t get it.

If being “Jewish” is based upon a religion or derived from a religion, then how can being “Jewish” be based upon a secular culture, rather than religion?

If it is based upon a cultural, secular identity, then it should be called something different and has nothing to do with Judaism, or Moses, or The Ten Commandments or any historical or factual relation to Judaism.

I still don’t get the connection.

Just aksing.

Being Jewish is both a religious thing and also a genetic thing and a cultural thing. For example, people with Jewish ancestry are more likely to have the genetic defect which leads to Tay-Sachs Disease. It doesn't matter if you've never gone to Temple or not.

Put another way, some folks are atheists and they raise their children to be atheists. But, some of those people may enjoy matzoh ball soup. They might listen to Klezmer music. They might say "Oy! Enough with the matzoh balls, already!"

Such people would be recognized as Jews (by themselves and by others) even if they didn't care about religion.

Yes, 90% is an exaggeration but there is no questioning that Jews consistently vote RAT in large numbers

"One of the most extraordinary features of Barack Obama's victory over John McCain was his capture of 78% of the Jewish vote. To be sure, there was nothing extraordinary about the number itself. Since 1928, the average Jewish vote for the Democrat in presidential elections has been an amazing 75%—far higher than that of any other ethno-religious group."

Whereas they espouse all the right values and principles in their personal lives, when it comes time to pull the lever, here is what you get

"Nevertheless, Mr. Obama beat Mr. McCain among Jewish voters by a staggering 57 points. Except for African Americans, who gave him 95% of their vote, Mr. Obama did far better with Jews than with any other ethnic or religious group. Thus the Jewish vote for him was 25 points higher than the 53% he scored with the electorate as a whole; 35 points higher than the 43% he scored with whites; 11 points higher than the 67% he scored with Hispanics; 33 points higher than the 45% he scored with Protestants; and 24 points higher than the 54% he scored with Catholics."

Of course, as the article points out, there will always be one group that is worse..African Americans

Sorry.

I still don’t understand how one can call himself Jewish and yet not have any connection to Judaism except through genetic inheritance or culture.

It still baffles me.

Best regards.

and then you have the (incorrect) notion that the Nazis were right wing, and therefore, Republicans who are also right wing are obviosuly close to Nazis.

Judged by the political typography used in the 1930s, Nazis were in fact regarded as "right-wing" then. In Europe, especially, in the 1930s, the "conservative" positions were nationalism, militarism and anti-Semitism, and the "liberal" positions were internationalism, pacifism and equal rights for Jews.

Another huge factor was that, when Nazi oppression of Jews ramped up in 1936-38, conservative Republicans in the U.S. Congress (joined by some southern Democrats) fought the efforts by northern Democrats to lift immigration quotas and allow Jewish refugees into the U.S.

Judaism is a religion, albeit one with different sub-denominations; the gap between the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) and the Reconstructionists is at least as wide as the gap between the Southern Baptists and the Unitarians. There is also a Jewish culture shared by most American Jews, regardless of their degree of religious observance.

But beyond that, Judaism is also an ethnicity; the Nazis murdered anyone with a Jewish grandparent, including some who were practicing Christians.

Thats true.. you don't..
In any religion you got yer believers and you got yer hangers on..
The hangers on... hang on for many reasons.. other than dogma..
Some are groupies, some are social butterflys, some are poseurs..
Many reasons to identify with groups..
All of them calling themselves whatever the group calls itself..

EXAMPLE.. Not all muslims are muslims.. this comes from the fact Mohamaad said, "If a muslim changes his religion- KILL HIM".. So saying you don't want to be a muslim anymore can get your ass killed or at least shunned/cast out.. Not a rare occurrence.. and if you're female its even WOrSe..

Other groups use other very effective means to do the same thing.. short of murder.. like shunning.. or casting out of the group-think physically by various methods..

Lots of reasons to remain a hanger-on.. because of family, friends, culture, identity, even your work or occupation.. livelyhood.. Lots of reasons to stay in a group you don't agree with.. If only because you don't know of anything better..

Jews up North in Canada voted strongly for the Conservative party over the Prime Minister’s support for Israel and the Liberal party’s non-support. A Jewish Tory almost took one of the historically safest Liberal seats (once held by Pierre Trudeau) because of it’s large Jewish population.

Gives one a little hope.

Jewish voters in Canada voted Conservative? That does give me hope.

Almost zero (nada) coverage of last week’s Canadian elections at all in the US! How insane is that. There was one important consequence of that Conservative victory in Canada: oil prices on world markets had at least a temporary pullback, yet absolutely no one is saying this in the American media. Just by talking about more oil exploration in Canada, the Canadian PM was able to move the overbought oil futures downward.

“...as opposed to the jinos some SCHU*KS HERE ARE WHINING ABOUT......”

Aha! Even the nobility engages in name-calling and loses its temper, and yells and screams.

Very interesting.

It would be nice if atheists didn’t hide behind someone else’s faith.

Best regards.
