No Breakfast For Kids Wearing ‘Wrong’ Shoes At Grade School
CBS ^ | May 9, 2011 4:56 PM | CBS 2 Dorothy Tucker

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago Public Schools is apologizing to a Chicago mother and her two young sons, ages 5 and 6, after they were denied breakfast because they came to schools wearing the wrong kind of shoes.

The Nicholson brothers only grab a quick snack before heading to class because they qualify for a full free breakfast at Adam Powell Grade School. It’s something they look forward to every day, and it hurt when they were recently turned away.

They were wearing black athletic shoes. The boys told their mom that the assistant principal, Angela Peagler wouldn’t let them eat because their shoes didn’t fit the school uniform, which calls for a regular black dress shoe...

Edwards says the boys have been wearing the shoes all year and administrators never complained...

The school’s dress code does not say the shoes have to be black dress shoes...

What do you propose to do about them instead?

Feeding a child is a very basic part of parenthood. A parent who refuses to feed her child is being grossly negligent. Children should be taken away from grossly negligent parents.

The cost of feeding a child breakfast for a month is about the same as a carton of cigarettes, or a 12 pack of beer, to put it in relevant perspective.

“Eventually they will use it to control and compell behavior.”

It used to be eventually, now it is immediate.

“It’s never been about what’s good for the children; but as usual, about control.”

Exactly. That is the reason that the liberals love government provided health care.

You’ve fallen into the socialist trap. Now, I’m not saying we should stand athwart free breakfasts yelling “Stop!” due to the ominous implications. What I am saying is that your question assumes far, far too much, and once you seriously ask it, there’s no end to what you consign yourself. It’s the exact question, in other words, that led to Obamacare. (”What do you propose to do about the uninsured instead?”)

Lots of frisky comments at the original source. Their grandma is chiming in. FWIW the two kids are black and I’ll bet the idiot principal is too

"What the hell do these kids do for breakfast in the summer...starve???"

Most of them probably sleep in 'til lunchtime. Hangovers can be pretty rough on the pre-teen crowd.

In your haste you obviously missed the kids were complying with the written rules all along.

The gubmint giveth, and the gubmint taketh away.

Around here they keep the cafeteria open year-round, and I doubt Chicago is any different.

I like a good joke too, but please. Uniforms do not communists make. I don’t believe in public education, but so long as I take it for granted I sincerely believe in uniforms. Or, at least, the prerogative to require uniforms. They’re not necessary, but they do fall within administrators’ purview.

In your haste you overlooked the fact that you have no idea what the rules are and how those rules are intended to be conveyed to the students.

You’ve fallen into the socialist trap.

And you've fallen so much in love with your grand theories, that you've apparently forgotten about the two little kids in this story, who are living in a shithole. Like a lot of other little kids.

You're perfectly happy to theorize about these children, and you freely use them to further your own agenda .... but isn't that exactly what the socialists do?

So let's get back to the human race here: what about those two little kids, then? What should be done about them?

Yes and they are desperately trying to further the control with ideas such as agenda 21. The food chain in our nation is under attack and not by natural elements but by those in government that wish to further control and enslave the American people.

It’s almost become cliche’ to say that the next election is the most critical in our nation’s history, but it is a fact.

The ‘Free’ Breakfast for the children is only one of hundreds of programs that have been going on for years which have weakened us to the point, that implementing the final marxist agenda is easy.

OK, fine ... and I even agree. Buy you'll note that that costs a lot more than breakfast.

You don't know where or how these students are living. But let us assume that they are living in dire circumstances. What has caused this? I believe it is caused by evil, nasty leftist attitudes as exhibited by these students' relatives, by their self-perceived advocates in their "community", by the leftist media, and by some foolish individuals posting to this thread.

What about our children and their children’s children, what are we saddling them with to pay for these children? The bill comes due eventually, but hey, we’ll all be dead anyway, so let’s party!

If people thought they would be forced to feed their own children or they might lose them, then I can’t help but think some of those parents would step up to the plate and feed their children. (I mean, think how their benefits would be cut if the kids are taken into state custody.)

Seriously, I think that by continuing to feed these children 3 meals a day, etc., it just makes the problem bigger and absolves the parents of their responsibility. It is teaching generations of “poor” that they just need to pop out the kids, and the government will do the rest. At some point, the government has to say “no”.

I know enough kids in similar circumstances to believe I've got a reasonably accurate idea of their circumstances. It's not their fault they live in a shithole; and given the situations they have to deal with, it's no surprise that they very often can't climb out, and thereby perpetuate the problem in the next generation. They live in an utterly toxic culture.

What has caused this? I believe it is caused by evil, nasty leftist attitudes as exhibited by these students' relatives, by their self-perceived advocates in their "community", by the leftist media, and by some foolish individuals posting to this thread.

Perhaps; though I suspect that the mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers who perpetuate the demographic (involved fathers being thin on the ground) generally have no serious political opinions at all. They're using the government handouts more like surrogate husbands than anything else -- and the males of the species are taking full advantage of their freedom.

There is obviously a political component to this sort of thing -- it is something that must be dealt with in Congress and elsewhere.

The political problem "conservatives" have -- as we see on this thread -- is that the kids are still stuck in the middle, and "conservatives" don't seem to care about them. And so, as predictable as the rising of tomorrow's sun, the left beats the holy hell out of us by pointing out who it is, precisely, who's paying the price for our "conservative" policies.

“School lunches for adults, too”

“No paperwork or proof of income will be required and no local funds are used, Bechtold said.”
“ It’s a federally funded program. Children from toddler through age 18 may participate, because “all kids need a nutritious meal. We don’t ask questions, they don’t have to fill out applications,” Bechtold said.
