No Breakfast For Kids Wearing ‘Wrong’ Shoes At Grade School

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago Public Schools is apologizing to a Chicago mother and her two young sons, ages 5 and 6, after they were denied breakfast because they came to schools wearing the wrong kind of shoes.

The Nicholson brothers only grab a quick snack before heading to class because they qualify for a full free breakfast at Adam Powell Grade School. It’s something they look forward to every day, and it hurt when they were recently turned away.

They were wearing black athletic shoes. The boys told their mom that the assistant principal, Angela Peagler wouldn’t let them eat because their shoes didn’t fit the school uniform, which calls for a regular black dress shoe...

Edwards says the boys have been wearing the shoes all year and administrators never complained...

The school’s dress code does not say the shoes have to be black dress shoes...

That's right, the written rules did not say what the assistant principal claimed they did.

Obviously, the government should be providing all children with regulation shoes as well as Michelle-approved food.

Your tax dollars at work. We now feed kids three meals a day at school, yet their parents still get food stamps, WIC and govt. cheese. No wonder obesity is a problem. Someone tell Michelle.

Who is the Adam Powell the school is named for?

Is it Adam Clayton Powell?

Did they also apologize to the boys’ father? Why only the mother? Do these boys have a father? Is the mother part of the “baby mama” culture?

That’s the problem when power for basic essentials is handed to a government body. Eventually they will use it to control and compell behavior. It’s never been about what’s good for the children; but as usual, about control.

Two kids miss breakfast one day over a minor misunderstanding and it makes the news.....Chicago must be a very small town.

Put a “gay” rainbow emblem on their shoes, and all will be well.

the real outrage here is that the schools are responsible for feeding breakfast to the students.

If you can feed 'em, don't breed 'em.

... the written rules did not say what the assistant principal claimed they did, leading one to believe the assistant principal can't read.

“That’s the problem when power for basic essentials is handed to a government body. Eventually they will use it to control and compell behavior.”

To be fair, the “basic essential” in question is education, which not me but many consider a perfectly legitimate application of government power. They’d have the power to control shoewear with or without free breakfasts. At best that “basic essential” adds power for whatever few minutes they come early.
