DETROIT The federal government on Monday awarded Michigan roughly $200 million toward a high-speed rail project that within three years is expected to shave 30 minutes off of a trip from Detroit to Chicago.
The grant was part of a 15-state, $2 billion disbursal that ties into President Barack Obamas broader goal of connecting 80 percent of Americans to high-speed rail in 25 years.
The majority of Michigans funding will go to the development of a 135-mile, high-speed stretch between Dearborn and Kalamazoo, part of the federally designated high-speed corridor between Detroit and Chicago. Maximum speeds on the stretch would reach 110 mph.

According the internet (which is never wrong), it’s a 5-6 hour drive.
The train will knock 30 minutes off that.

This is great. 47% of the Detroiters couldn’t read the train ticket and the balance are unemployed. This program would guarantee that Illinois would get conceal-carry, no doubt, slam-dunk.
If the train can travel 110, let’s say average 80, then that’s about a 3 hour trip. I always had a hard time driving from Chicago to Dearborn in less than 4 hours. Plus, you skip the tollroads, traffic jams, parking, etc.
And, you can drink while you “drive”!
Hawaii spent a gazillion bucks telling us how wonderful rail will be, how much time we'll save, all illustrated by beautiful visions from architects being
bribed hired to produce drawings of beautifully landscaped futuristic rail stops and stations. For a few months we were inundated by "public service"ads on how wonderful our great mayor was to envision rail. Total cost is now up over $10 billion - and that's just for a 20-mile corridor. Detroit to Chicago??? $200 million? Might as well just throw it in Lake Michigan.

Also, how many people go back and forth between Chicago and Detroit on a frequent basis? I’m guessing it’s not that many unless all the Bamsters friends need to go to ground and disappear when things get too hot for them in Chicago (a la Al Capone - except western Michigan was good enough for Capone).
Actually, it would be a far better idea to use the 200 mil to renovate Detroit’s “People Mover.”
Or they could do something really crazy and fix the roads which most of us actually use.

A plane makes the trip in far less time and does not require the infrastructure investment.
Sure you can drink while you ride but you can also get rolled by the gangbangers who will own this line in no time.
One of the beauties of automotive travel is that you don’t get stuck sitting next to someone who smells badly, passes gas frequently, talks endlessly, or sing rap music for the whole trip. John Rocker was right.

Besides, this just DNC walking around money. By the time the eminent domain suits work their way through the courts, the environmentalists fight the path of the rail through a mosquito bog (gotta protect the mosquitoes), etc., etc.

Well, yeah to all that, but I once “got lucky” on a train.
if there are a thousand people that go from Detroit to Chicago daily, and it is financed by ticket prices, that works out to be a surcharge of less than 10 dollars a ticket.
It certainly could have been financially self-financing.
If that were the case it would be worth the cost but it isn’t. Most of the murder and mayhem would be committed against black people in Chicago and the Democrats don’t care about them. They would still oppose CC.
Even if this expenditure of money achieves everything promised, the trains will be no faster the the Detroit Arrow operated by the Pennsylvania and Wabash railroads 80 years ago (with steam engines and without subsidy).
What happens at either end when you have to drive?
Take a cab? Take a nap? I can only have two drinks—over a four hour period that keeps me legal.
