Rick Perry Presidential Push Quietly Gains Steam
RCP ^

Posted on 05/17/2011 12:58:32 PM PDT by Retired Greyhound

As many grass-roots Republicans remain in search of a conservative candidate with the pizazz to go toe-to-toe against President Obama, a man from deep in the heart of Texas who was tea party before the tea party was cool appears to be giving the presidential race some thought. Gov. Rick Perry has insisted on multiple occasions that he has no interest in the presidency, but RCP has learned that political associates have begun to nose around quietly on Perry's behalf. A Texas pol who is close to Perry has been telling a few key strategists that the nation's longest-serving governor sees a vacuum and is waiting to be summoned into the race. This source believes that could happen by late summer. Without fellow Southerners Haley Barbour or Mike Huckabee in the race -- and with Newt Gingrich's early troubles raising further doubts about the current lineup -- there could be a glaring niche for Perry to fill. According to another well-connected Republican, at least one Perry confidant has been very quietly making inquiries about the political terrain in the nation's first voting state of Iowa. A third Perry associate, RCP has learned, has been heralding a small contingent of Iowans with the time-tested line that is often used by would-be candidates who are leaving their options open: "Keep your powder dry." Perry's aides have long made it clear that the tough-talking Texan, who succeeded George W. Bush in Austin in 2000, would not seriously entertain the idea of mounting a White House run before the state's legislative session finishes at the end of this month. That date is now less than two weeks away, and the 2012 presidential field remains fluid.

If given the choice between another four years of the Kenyan squatter in the White House or Gov. Goodhair, I’ll take Gov. Goodhair.

I am not a huge fan of Gov. Goodhair.

Compared to Romney, Newt, and the rest of the 7 dwarfs running for President (excepting Palin), he’s a rock star.

“Norris/Norris”

Right on! Chuck Norris can slam a revolving door. So if he wants to be his own Veep, I’m down with that. :)

No. No Perry. He beats the heck out of White, his last opponent for governor, but that’s about as far as that goes. No Perry for POTUS. No.

Perry is no Republican, no conservative. He’s a Perryite. He’s for him.

Didn’t the Tea Party get behind this guy.
He was at their events.

Palin endorsed him.

Gingrich will never again poll above 10%. He's finished.

If you're claiming that name recognition is all that matters at this point in the primary process, you're correct. If you're claiming it's going to be determinative, you're very badly mistaken.

I’ve posted this before, as a Texan I wasn’t either in favor of mandating the vaccine, or against it. I’m 60 years old, and I even had to take shots to go to school. Perry liked the idea, but didn’t force it when folks opposed it. I see nothing wrong with that. He wanted a superhighway here in Texas that the feds wouldn’t own as well, and was beaten, mostly by the media, and abandoned it. Perry listens to the Texas people, and while he’s not perfect, I certainly see him as good as anyone out there. I’d support a Perry-Palin ticket, or the other way around.

You must have a much closer view of Perry than I do, because to me he just “backed off” from those things when he was told NO!

A true Conservative would never have tried to push those things or defend those things in the first place.

The fact that so many of the things he tried to push involved companies that hired his buddies makes it all that more despicable. It reminds me so much of the way the Democrats used to run Texas all the way up through the late 1980s.

"...a man from deep in the heart of Texas who was tea party before the tea party was cool..."

No - Rick Perry simply has good political instincts, and shmoozed up to the Tea Party early on, then went on to make a bunch of tough-sounding statements which earned him a bit of street cred on the right.

I say this as a Texan who hopes he stays out of it.

Here comes the Perry/Palin ticket Must be what she is waiting on.

Heh heh..... geeez, you're funny sometimes. Ya got it entirely backwards, sport.

But tell me....is PDS merely irritating, or does it actually hurt?

Perry/Palin 2012 ...and I'm sticking with it.

In your dreams. Palin will never play second banana again in this life. Rest assured of that.

I hear what you are saying and I haven't picked a candidate because all the choices aren't out there. I will say, if it is Perry v. obama, Perry will get my vote. I will NOT EVER vote for a 3rd party no matter how dismal the Republican candidate might be. Ross Perot is still sitting grinning in the back of my mind. I had relatives who voted for him and tried to convince us that he was the one. I am thankful that we didn't fall for that hoaxster!

...he seems to be free of RINO Disease.

A lot of Texans might disagree with that.

Perry is a Republican only out of sheer political opportunism, and a conservative when his arm is twisted hard enough to break.

That said, he does respond to pressure, and is keen to respond to the prevailing political winds. It's more than I can say for a lot of other politicians (spit), but I don't think Perry has a core.
