Way to go, California. Disarm the law-abiding citizens, when you have no freaking way of disarming the criminal element.

More politics. Portantino is attempting to generate interest and liberal support for his plan to run again House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier.

Yet not a word for illegal cartel sponsored street gangs in his own neighborhood.

The Kooks have invaded and now are taking over all sense of order.

I would feel safer with a citizen carrying a firearm openly, not less so. These liberal morons will never understand.

"Our families deserve to feel safe in our parks and coffee shops," said Portantino, D-La Cañada Flintridge.

A Democrat is now representing that area???? I remember not too long ago, that area was solidly conservative Republican.

Gads, I'm glad I moved to Texas when I did.

Easy solution - load them!

Remember, Huey Newton and the Black Panthers exploited an open-carry law back in the 1960’s to make their first show of force, and you know what happened after that.

If open-carry of unloaded weapons is legal, so be it. If open carry of a loaded weapon is legal, even better.

The Left hates an armed citizenry.

The most pressing problem in California today is the necessity of infringing on the rights of law abiding citizens. Well done.

Just a backdoor way to outlaw gun shows and firing ranges. I tell you, my beloved state is completely out of control. We’re looking at land in TN, WY, ID. Gonna join the eastward migration asap.

Why would anyone carry an unloaded gun? Did I miss something?

Hey, California geniuses, you might want to defend yourself against getting robbed on the way to get the “cheeseburger,” and on the way home for that matter.

Given what is coming there, I would disarm everyone.

Get rid of the steel silverware too.

It will be a hoot to watch them stab each other with ecofriendly sporks.

That's what it's always about.

Never mind actually being safe.

I wouldn’t move back there if they made me king and gave me a nice IPO as a birthday present. Smart, conservative Californians need to scout out a place in Texas or the Dakotas or somesuch. If you can’t find a good job in Dallas/Ft Worth or Houston, you ain’t trying.

>”The “open carry” movement created shock waves in 2009 when about a dozen people carrying guns, including one with a military-style rifle, stood outside an Arizona convention center where President Barack Obama was speaking”<

The Citizen “protesters” were three blocks away from where Obama was speaking. That was where the Black guy was carrying his AR-15 and PMSNBC cropped the picture so people would think he was just another Timothy McVeigh.

"You don't need a handgun to order a cheeseburger," he said. "You don't need a handgun to order a cup of coffee."

He must not have been to a MacDonald's lately...

Ed Worley, the NRA's CA State Liaison, was on NRA News after the Assembly passed AB144. I clipped out the audio and posted is here. Go take a listen. There are a couple of interesting things he mentions. The first is that public safety was not the reason some legislators voted for the bill. They were far more concerned with people wearing firearms openly to make a political statement. In other words, their intent wasn't to violate the 2nd Amendment, but rather the 1st Amendment.

There are also some very interesting legal ramifications if the bill becomes law. There have been two cases thus far in CA where Federal judges have ruled against CCW applicants who challenged our capricious "may issue" system. In both cases, the judges pointed out that since open carry is legal in this State, denying one a concealed carry permit doesn't infringe on one's right to use a firearms in self defense outside the home. Keep in mind that in both Heller and McDonald, the right of self defense was called a fundamental right that cannot exist without the right to keep and bear arms. Now, if AB144 passes, the only legal alternative to CCW will be outlawed. How then can one exercise the right to armed self defense?

There are only two manners in which one may carry a firearm: Openly or concealed. If one, open carry, is specifically outlawed, that leaves one and only one legal alternative: Concealed carry. The US Supreme Court has recognized the importance of armed self defense; that this is a fundamental right. And through the 14th Amendment, they have recognized that the States and localities have no power to infringe upon that right. Thus no State or locality may have a total ban on an activity related to that right. Total bans on gun possession are unconstitutional and illegal. Total bans on handgun possession are illegal. Do you see where this is going? The briar patch that Portantino threatens to toss us into may result in court-mandated shall-issue concealed carry!

Ed states that legislators were warned about this. The look he got in return is best described as "Bambi in headlights".

The unloaded open carry people were wasting their time getting together and showing their guns in public at Starbucks while knowing that there would likely be a backlash from the anti-gun politicians. When the law passes (as it did before) and the Republican governor is no longer there to veto it this year, these open carry people will have succeeded in screwing over the rest of us gun owners.

There are still a few legal ways to carry a gun in California outside of the home. However, a lot of cops don’t care about the law and will harass you if you have a gun. The unloaded open carry law (as it now exists) would have been a useful backup legal defense to keep me from being arrested if I ever needed to pull out my gun in self-defense. Now that law will be gone, absent a long and uphill challenge to the law through the courts. Stupid.

The Luby's massacre was an incident of mass murder that took place on October 16, 1991 when George Jo Hennard drove his pickup truck into a Luby's Cafeteria and shot and killed 23 people
