Air Force One executed a missed approach on its first attempt to land today at Bradley Field in Connecticut, circling the airport before making a successful landing on the second try.
The FAA said visibility was below the minimum, meaning the pilots couldnt see the runway from the altitude required for landing due to thick cloud cover. They were coming in to Runway 6 on instrument approach.
Weather at the field at the time was overcast with visibility of 1.5 miles and cloud ceiling 300 feet to 1000 feet variable.
Sources said the attempt was not a touch-and-go or dramatic maneuver that would have caught attention from those on the ground.
A missed approach is called by the pilot in command of an aircraft or the aircraft crew at any point in the approach to an airport on aninstrument approach, an aviation expert told ABC News.
It simply means that the pilot was uncomfortable completing the approach due to visibility, cloud ceiling, or any number of reasons. ..

the press onboard said they didn’t notice anything.
Too bad they didn’t just keep going and land in France. I think the French are down one socialist.
Wow. That kind of thing should not happen, unless there was some sort of “special” reason the flight crew was concerned about the approach. It just does NOT happen with AF1.
That’s because they Air Force guys are pros, and the event in question isn’t a big deal. It just has a menacing sounding name....”missed approach” makes people think about something like this:

Good thing our national asset (including the fine crew) is not harmed.
As for Barry, what is the purpose of this said trip again? What national importance? To what regular citizens will this trip benefit?
I thought so.
“Executes a missed approach”
Perfect metaphor for the Obama administration.
The missed approach is part of instrument flying, and the visibility goes below minimums at decision height (or if the approach is "off" for other reasons), we fly the "miss".
(It's a good thing.)
.
The new “longest 40 minutes” of his life. Can’t wait to hear the press regale us with tales of his coolness in a tense situation. Blech. The plane should have a “Baby on Board” sticker.
At least they weren’t trying to land in Smolensk.
I asked the Stew 'wassup' as we were disembarking and she just replied something about "another aircraft" in the vicinity -- never did learn whether it was a runway incursion or what.
I wonder if his re-election campaign will be stupid enough to use this to manufacture a “running on the tarmac dodging sniper fire” story, since Obama single-handedly track OBL’s hideout and took out our national enemy #1.
the visibility is obviuosly racist
Obozo must have been giving them a talk about how great he is and they were in rapture.
Did you read the article? The go around was due to visibility. It's no big deal.
Another subliminal coup. The only problem is that obama is too stupid to pick up on it.
When you can't see the runway environment --- time to go....
Climb out --have another coffee-- Hold for a bit....
Then - Take another look
BTW -- Not every US airport is equipped for zero/zero landings.
Even when the aircraft is equipped and certified, the ground-based systems must be are installed, likewise certified and continuously monitored by ATC.
Welcome to instrument flight rules...
Slow news day.
Going missed is routine when visibility is close to minimums.
I'm pretty sure the president chided the pilot and then took over the controls and executed a flawless landing on the next approach.
