One day to go! Harold Camping is counting down to the rapture (May 21, 2011 is upon us)

In truth, the ideas and images in men’s minds are the invisible powers that constantly govern them. - John Locke, English philosopher, physician

The American evangelicals whose frenzied scriptural arithmetic points to the Second Coming of Christ 2,000 years after his birth are engaged in an activity which has been threatening the stability of the Christian Church since the second century; they are trying to align God’s calendar with man’s. - Damian Thompson, author, ‘The End of Time’

MIDDLE EAST, INDIA, May 19, 2011 —I bumped into Harold Camping when I came across his book ‘1994?’

Since he put a question mark at the end of the title I didn’t write him off completely because much of what he talks and writes about is certainly found in the Bible.

SNIP SNIP

In fact 1 Thess 5: 2 says, “for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.”

But Camping figures it’s okay to work out the year and the month and in fact goes on and tells us both a month, a day and an hour - he says Jesus' return will probably happen with a massive earthquake around 6pm on May 21, 2011 in which ever part of the world you are!

America is full of 'experts' in every field you can think of and at the age of 89, Camping cannot be denied his expertise in the Bible, which he claims he has researched for most of his life.

He is basically telling people they cannot take the plain meaning of what is said in the Bible to understand the scriptures, but with his God given key he can, while everyone else has misinterpreted when the end times will happen.

If I’m time traveling to, say, 1940...do I get left behind?

Don't know but I suggest you invest in XEROX.

What time will this hit the midwest? If I’m going to die, I won’t cut the grass, but if not, how long should I wait until I know the end isn’t going to happen tomorrow? I don’t want to cut the grass in the dark, and I can’t do it on Sunday. It’s been raining a lot and I really need to get at it if the world doesn’t end.

Well, I think Camping says the rapture is coming on May 21st and will be kicked off by earthquakes. I don't think the world is supposed to end till October. So, assuming you've missed the boat and aren't zipped off to heaven on Saturday, you'll probably still have to attend to your yard till the whole words implodes sometime in Oct. Now this assumes the earthquakes didn't destroy your lawn or lawn care equipment. Even at that though, if you've been skipped over on rapture day and now realize the world will end in a few months, are you really going to feel motivated to mow the grass?

I heard two stories this morning about entreprenurs exploiting the opportunity:
One fellow is selling "Pet Care" for those who on Saturday will be taken up by the Lord into the sky. His sales pitch goes: "Who will take care of your beloved pets after you are gone? For just $500 those of us left behind will ensure the continued care of your pets."

Apparently he's sold 200 contracts to the followers.

Another one says that it would be environmentally irresponsible to leave food in the refrigerator to spoil after you have ascended to the sky. He is selling a service whereby he will ensure that the leftover food is collected and distributed to the left-behind poor.

What will happen to the folks in the Space Shuttle?

I guess they'll be able to wave at the elect as they fly by.

I heard on the radio this morning that, although everyone of Camping’s flock have divested themselves of their money and posessions, Camping himself has yet to do so.

What if I'm in an airplane flying over the earthquake?

Hope the pilot's an atheist.

Well we certainly don’t have to worry about losing any politicians to the rapture.

The earthquake poses a dilemma.

Should we be huddled under a sturdy table at 5:58 to protect us from the earthquake? But if we’re raptured, won’t we bump our head if we’re under the table?

Who knew it would be this confusing!

both are fulfilling end times prophecies of the increase of false prophets.

I'm not so sure we are seeing an increase in false prophets. Charlatans like Camping have been predicting the end of the world forever. Camping himself predicted the same thing back in 1994. Look up date setters and you'll see a long and rich history of these types of con men.

Yes, one day we will have an increase in false prophets, but I don't think that time is now. Camping is just a run of the mill lying hack, and his followers are gullible fools who are so desperate to believe the end is near that they will trust almost anything he says. Human nature is what it is, and this type of thing has been the norm throughout human history.

“Can’t wait to hear Camping’s excuses on May 22nd for why the rapture didn’t happen.”

Well, he came to it via the Bible and some math.

I think he forgot to carry the 1.

I know, it is amazing, isn’t it? Because we then will hear over and over “Where is the promise of His coming?”

And with Obama throwing Israel under the bus, it is all lining up just as He said it would!

Maranatha!
