Republican senators press president on War Powers deadline

Washington (CNN) – As the U.S. military campaign in Libya approaches the 60-day mark this Friday, six Republican senators wrote President Obama asking if he will comply with the War Powers Act, which says Congress must authorize action that lasts more than 60 days.

"Friday is the final day of the statutory sixty-day period for you to terminate the use of the United States Armed Forces in Libya under the War Powers Resolution. Last week some in your Administration indicated use of the United States Armed Forces will continue indefinitely, while others said you would act in a manner consistent with the War Powers Resolution. Therefore, we are writing to ask whether you intend to comply with the requirements of the War Powers Resolution. We await your response," wrote the GOP senators Wednesday.

He can’t possibly ignore this...

Well he can and would get away with it as the media thinks he is so above the law they cover for him.

The first girlie mistake was asking him if was going to comply with the law?” By asking, they gave him permission to ignore the law.

"Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told The Hill he believes formal congressional authorization for the Libyan intervention is unnecessary."

Sooooo..... what are they gonna do about it?

Send another letter?

Republicans, the new party of letter writing to demand things from power hungry dictators.

Honestly, I would love to see what exactly they will do.

"There is a law. It's on the books, and in plain reading of the War Powers Act, he appears to be in violation of the War Powers Act."

Whether or not we think the War Powers Act is constitutional, we do not have right to ignore it. It is the Supreme Court's responsibility and right to make that determination. Chaos results when it is left up to presidents, congressmen, judges, bureaucrats, or even the military to ignore laws they believe are unconstitutional. The proper way is challenge them in court. Until a law is declared unconstitutional in a court of law, we must support it and enforce it, unless, of course, it is also immoral. I don't think anyone can make the case, though, that the War Powers Act is immoral.

President Obama, then, is obligated to obey the War Powers Act, whether or not he believes it is unconstitutional. And the House of Representatives should impeach him for already failing to do so. Our actions against Libya are clearly in violation of the War Powers Act. He should be impeached and the Senate should put him on trial and remove him from office for failing to uphold the laws of the United States. The violation has already occurred by simply engaging in the operation, whether or not he violates it further by failing to get congressional approval within 60 days. The violation that will occur at midnight tonight is merely a second count against him.

If, in his Senate trial, he wishes to make the case that the War Powers Act is unconstitutional, then let him do that. It really doesn't help his case, because he still has the obligation to obey it until that is decided by the courts. If the Senate to acquit him on that grounds, then that would give those who believe the War Powers Act is unconstitutional a pretty strong argument.

Of course, this ain't gonna happen because there no one in either the House or the Senate has big enough stones to do it. But it is fun, in a frustrating sort of way, to dream about it.

If Senator Paul really believes what he says, then he has a constitutional responsibility to work to get his colleagues in the House of Representatives to introduce the appropriate articles of impeachment against President Obama.

One possible response from 'the administration' - as related through Jay "Gibby Junior" Carney at an upcoming 'press briefing':

"...and I'd like to remind all those in congress who are criticizing our Dear Leader about Libya by invoking the so-called "War Powers Act" that the so-called "WAR Powers Act" does not apply here. There is NO war; I repeat NO war! The current activities in Libya are nothing more than a short-term ongoing kinetic military action; and they're NOT even a >b>U.S. kinetic military action -- they are part of a NATO kinetic military action. So, U.S. law does not apply here! And even if it did, there is no such thing as the "Kinetic Military Action Powers Act", so their ARE no restrictions on the president's powers in that regard. These unpatriotic republicans in congress just need to get out of the president's face about this before someone gets hurt.

Also, the U.N., you know, the United NATIONS, which I remind you is a WORLD-wide political body, passed a Resolution, a WHOLE Resolution, permitting our president to do pretty much anything he wants in Libya. And I ask you, what business does ANYONE in our mere NATIONAL-level congress have DISAGREEING with a WORLD-wide political organization?

These people need to wise up and realize who's REALLY in charge around here -- and they need to keep in mind that WE know where each and every one of them lives..."

This whole adventure is intended to benefit European economies, globalist transnational government, and opportunistic jihadists at the cost - again - of American blood and money. Of course, the present administration does have a vested interest in the success of opportunist jihadists, and globalism.

This thing is toxic at every level.

Global communism failed with global warming so now Obama has to gut the US to force NWO. If anyone has any evidence otherwise please post.

They will be waiting a long time. Barry doesn’t need anyone’s permission. He is King now and everybody needs to sit down and STFU.

Yes.

But this time it will be a “VERY sternly-worded letter” instead of just a “sternly worded letter” like the last one...

This little understanding needs to be cleared up. The War Powers act only applies to Republican Presidents. It was never intended to be applied to a Rat President.

I can easily imagine what would be happening in President Bush were still in office. The a..hole libs would be screaming, having fits, and foaming at the mouth every night chanting "War Powers Act." The President had BETTER adhere to the War Power Act. Grrrrrr Grrrrrrrr Grrrrrrr. And their A/H buddies in the state run media would be in agreement and everyone would be in a royal fury.

But - now that a DEMOCRAT is in office, who cares? And besides, Obama has essentially told them all to stick their War Powers Act where the sun don't shine. He just couldn't care less.
