ANDECHS, Germany (AFP) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Saturday that 2022 was "a good time" for Germany to end nuclear power, backing a proposal by the Bavarian wing of her party.

...

Following the earthquake and tsunami which wrecked the Japanese nuclear plant of Fukushima in March, Merkel ordered the closure for three months of Germany's seven oldest reactors.

She also announced a moratorium for the same period of an earlier decision by her government to extend the lifetime of Germany's 17 reactors by an average of 12 years.

heck yeah, let’s go back to burning whale blubber. Nuclear offers a clean non polluting source of energy but let’s let the boogey man prevail over common sense.

Stupid.....

Understatement! It's stupidity squared. I guess the Germans can continue to burn coal and buy electricity from next door France. I know they are big on Solar Power but the two weeks total I spend in Germany, I think the Sun was shinning only about 20% of the time.

I've never understood the German mentality. On one day, they seem brilliant, and then they do the dumbest things. Any German (present or past) who can explain this?

I suppose they rival us in certain ways. They have their moments of brilliance, and then there are times when people like 0bama get elected.

China is moving toward LFTR (Thorium). I wish we were doing the same in the USA.

America needs cheap electricity if we are going to remain competitive with the rest of the world.

As best as I can tell, Germany is geologically stable and if a Tsunami can hit Germany then their nuclear reactors are the least of their problems. It will be the end of days if Germany were to be hit by a 9.0 earthquake and near simultaneous tsunami.

The Germans have lost their minds. I wonder if its occurred to these anti-nuke types that their electricity rates are gonna skyrocket. They will need to buy electricity from France. They will be blackmailed by Russia over Natural Gas and they will have to burn coal like it's going out of style. Do they understand this? What's with these people?

Nothing wrong with replacing old nukes with newer, safer ones.

Germans pay the equivalent of $.30/kwH - in Switzerland right now I pay $.23 - according to a rate chart from my old home town (Baltimore) - the average is $.11 ....

On some matters like multiculturalism Mrs. Merkel is quite astute, on others she’s a typical eurocrat, barely able to rub two neurons together without needing a loaner.

The euros are an enigma sometimes.

Right, makes perfect sense since an earthquake and tsunami in Japan obviously have something to do with the workings of nuclear reactors in Germany.

The mindlessness of the opposition to nuclear power never fails to impress.

Maybe she’s planning on burning a certain ethnic group for fuel. Those post WWII workers perhaps?
