Bears escaping river flooding in Mississippi Delta between Rolling Fork and Yazoo City (pics)

This is a photo taken this morning of a black swamp bear on the move in Mississippi in the Delta up between Panther Burn and Delta National Forest about 8 miles west/southwest of Yazoo City off Satarita road area.

We all knew bears were there but you rarely see them. It's funny, we were just talking about this here last week.

Nice size bear too btw.

Concord, Mass., 20 miles west of Boston has had recent bear and bobcat (I personally saw one) sightings and moose occasionally come as close as Newton, about ten miles from Boston.

I wonder if bears become more dangerous if they are out of their element?

Love the pics...I live just north of this area, and have spent many Sunday afternoons “turnrow ridin’” in that area..One of the hardest parts of dealing with this “May Rise” is seeing the stress on our local wildlife.

Neat pics. We get lots of bears where I live - even here in town. A few months ago one took out one of our backyard birdfeeders.

The bear population has increased significantly over the past twenty years or so. Oh, not just here in NY, but in most states. I think a lot of people would be very surprised to know what wanders around in their towns at night.

I think that is one of the ones from our neck of the woods. According to my parents, who still live in MS, there are four that are tagged and maybe some others living in the area that are not.

You’re good at weighing dogs. Spend some more time looking at young bears.

Hey, I’ve actually been to both of those places. Had my pic taken on the lawn of the Sharkey County Courthouse (cause Muddy Waters was born there—not the courthouse, but the county).

Neat pics, thanks for the ping.

Reminds me of the big flood we had on the lower Pearl in 1990. I was working in NOLA at the time. I crossed the Pearl just at day break. There was a little high ground in the medium on the run up to the bridge. I swear, it looked like a scene from 'Bambi'. There were bears, hogs, deer, turkey, rabbits, foxes, coons, you name it all milling around. They were flooded out of Honey Island Swamp. It was a sight to see.

....and yes, there are 'panthers' or more precisely, jaguarundi, in Mississippi and south Alabama. My family sees and hears them frequently in northern Jackson County.

I forget what Chet did...may have been on JR’s come and get me homosexual purge thread

Chet was good on polling data in races though

I think he must have suffered something from a dog attack..which if he did and it was tragic...I do feel for him even if I like Bully type dogs

Sorry, there are no Jaguarundi in MS or AL, and they don't match the description of the size of what the majority of people claim to have seen. Jaguarundi are known not to exist here, so they are not on the endangered species list and can legally be trapped, hunted, etc., so it would be extremely easy to prove me wrong if your family encounters them frequently. The cats most folks describe encountering are cougar-sized with tracks 4” or so across, which would be left by a cat more than twice the size of what you listed. Of course, there is not supposed to be any big cat species here, but it is known as fact that cougars did at one time inhabit MS, while the known range of the jaguarundi has never extended this far.

I trust my brother’s description and research more than your blanket statement. His neighbor’s have reported seeing the same sort of cat in the area. Their descriptions closely match that of a Jaguarundi. Many animals have sought new territories as habitat has been compromised.
