This is a photo taken this morning of a black swamp bear on the move in Mississippi in the Delta up between Panther Burn and Delta National Forest about 8 miles west/southwest of Yazoo City off Satarita road area.
We all knew bears were there but you rarely see them. It's funny, we were just talking about this here last week.
Nice size bear too btw.
Homeboys and Girls ping
I love that last photo. The profile looks like a cave painting. How big would say this one is?
150-175 pounds. He is skinny with no big round belly and short thick neck.
I have no clue...seeing bears in Mississippi is uncommon...they tend to live in deep swamps where few folks go..it looks rangy
animal rights activists often clamour they are all gone...they will often claim only 50-100 bears left in the state at most which is such BS
they say the same about panthers...they get proven wrong on that too
I have no clue how many there are...less than Indian days no doubt but still a fair number...Mississippi is very sparsely populated compared to say Middle TN where I now live but even here they find bears in parts of the state they swore had none...I saw one hit by a car 75 miles west of where they swore up and down was bear’s limit of habitat
bears are not quite up to coyote adaptive skills but they can coexist with humans
I have had Rottweillers and Johnson Bulldogs that weighed 150 pounds and I can promise you that bear weighs more than they did/do
I don’t know much about bears or coyotes because I don’t want to. They are scary, and live in my neck of the woods.
However, I’ve been worried about all of the wildlife along the river. I’m glad to see at least one bear finding his way.
What do you want to bet that many creatures instinctively find their way to safety? Unlike some mammals I know...
*cough*Katrina*cough*
no kidding
I agree. Males can get up to 600lbs and while skinny, that's not a small bear.
yep...judging by the weeds I would wager that bear is at least average black bear height of 34-36 inches at the whithers
and my bullies were 25 inches at whithers and 150 pounds...it’s not fat like one going into hibernation I agree
but it doesn’t look small stature wise
it’s old hat to folks in typical bear country but around Mississippi it’s not common to see them...I believe there are more than they guess but they live so remote in deep woods and relatively inaccessible cypress swamps
They are all headed to Oxford for cheerleader tryouts.
Twice that if not more. Not very hefty but good size
they say the same about panthers...they get proven wrong on that too
They don't frequent the hunters forums and look at the wildlife trail camera photos. There are plenty of bears and panthers that pop up on them.
I saw several hogs near the Bonne Carre spillway after they opened it on my way to work one morning. Looks like a truck got a small one on the highway too.
nice photos - thanks!
If I had to meet up with a bear, I would not want it to be a skinny one. Very fat, well fed to the point of drowsiness, that's the bear for me, then I'd fall down and play dead and hope and pray.
Not just bears but news reports have included gators and snakes.
The buddy system works well.
For the faster buddy.
The fields themselves may explain the rangy look. A few weeds are growing from the furrows but the seed doesn't look like it germinated. Crop failure in the works.
Yep. Don’t have to be faster than the bear... just faster than YOU!
