Sea levels set to rise by up to a metre: report from Australian climate study

SYDNEY (AFP) – Sea levels are set to rise by up to a metre within a century due to global warming, a new Australian report said Monday as it warned this could make "once-a-century" coastal flooding much more common.

The government's first Climate Commission report said the evidence that the Earth's surface was warming rapidly was beyond doubt.

Drawn from the most up-to-date climate science from around the world, the report said greenhouse gas emissions created by human industry was the likely culprit behind rising temperatures, warming oceans, and rising sea levels.

Its author Will Steffen said while the report had been reviewed by climate scientists from Australian science body the CSIRO, the Bureau of Meteorology and academics, some judgments, including on sea levels, were his own.

"I expect the magnitude of global average sea-level rise in 2100 compared to 1990 to be in the range of 0.5 to 1.0 metre," Steffen said in his preface to "The Critical Decade".

He said while this assessment was higher than that of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change in 2007, which was under 0.8m, it was not inconsistent with the UN body which had said higher values were possible.

"We're five years down the track now, we know more about how those big ice sheets are behaving," Steffen told reporters.

"In part we have some very good information about the Greenland icesheet. We know it's losing mass and we know it's losing mass at an increasing rate.

"So that's telling us that we need to extend that upper range a bit towards a metre. Now there are commentators who say it should be even higher than that."

The report said a sea-level rise of 0.5m would lead to surprisingly large impacts, with the risk of extreme events such as inundations in coastal areas around Australia's largest cities of Sydney and Melbourne hugely increased.

Steffen said in some instances, a one-in-a-hundred year event could happen every year.

So, how much of a rise have they measured so far? Or is this just another load of crap?

“set to rise”? Set by who? At the rate they are really rising, they had better hurry up!

I’ve seen this story before. It turns out that the water level wasn’t rising after all. Gilligan was just moving the Professor’s tide gauge stick further out, using it as an anchor for a crab trap tether or some such.

No mystery. Gravity pushes water down under.

I thought that the consensus model results from 10 years ago said we’d have half a meter ocean rise by NOW?

Lessee, Let’s do the math. If the seas were to rise a meter (or metre for you EuroEggheads, then we would have to calculate 1 metre x the cubic miles of the sea...Hmmm..just the concept of that means that someone (God?) would have to create a heck of a lot more water........

Preposterous and utterly silly in it’s face.

They told us 15 years ago at Kyoto that the temperature was rising rapidly and it’s supposed to have been a lot higher by now. Instead temps have barely budged. That’s why they changed from “Global Warming” to “Global Climate Change”. Since this article is still using “Warming” they obviously failed to get the memo from Chicken Little Central.

I’m about 250 meters above sea level, so I’m not worried.

A one-meter rise may give New York, Washington DC, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco something to keep them busy, so I say: let ‘er rip.

what DON’T liberals lie about?
...this is just another part of the AGW hoax.
actually the sea level has already stopped rising,
because the earth has been getting colder since 2003.

I would fear an attack by flying pigs before I would worry about the ocean rising a meter (approx 3 feet to us humans).

Lessee, Let’s do the math...

Surface area of the "world ocean:" 361 million square kilometers.

To wrap a slice of water one meter thick around all that area would take... let's see...

A meter is 0.001 km, so that's 361 million times 0.001 equals 361 thousand cubic kilometers, or almost 87,000 cubic miles of water. That's a cube 44.3 miles on a side. And that's not counting the increase in the surface area of the oceans that would result as they flooded inland over every continent.

Obama stopped the rising of the seas. He said so. He doesn’t lie.

“isn’t New York City and Florida under water yet?”

Not sure if they are below sea level yet, but I’ve heard that a lot of homeowners in both New York and Florida are “Under Water”.

I do know that a lot of the MSM folks in New York are “All Wet”!

Is this proof of sea levels rising?

0.3mm

Measured from a satalite.

If you believe that an object in space can measure o.3mm difference in a dynamic system.

Frankly, I find the notion silly.

And I am a rocket scientist.

YMMV.
