Liberal Hochul Edges Out Corwin in NY-26

One could almost hear the collective gasps and subsequent excuses among Republicans from Buffalo, New York to Washington DC when the news came Tuesday night that Republican Jane Corwin was edged out in the nationally-watched special House election in New York’s 26th District.

In losing to liberal Democrat Kathy Hochul by a margin of about 47% to 43%, State Asssemblywoman Corwin lost the Buffalo-area district that had been firmly in Republican hands since the late Jack Kemp won his first term in Congress there back in 1970.

Thanks Newt for attacking Ryan’s plan for Medicare.

Once again he has influenced an election to the detriment of the republican.

The fake tea party candidate didn’t help either.

Medicare works again. All we will hear for the next year is Mediscare, Mediscare, Mediscare. Thanks brilliant GOP.

It seems to me that the lesson in this is that 3rd party candidates are problematic for Republicans. They can be disastrous when handled as poorly as Corwin handled this one.

If Corwin’s problem really was the Ryan plan, her best bet would have been to bring Paul in for a town hall meeting. He tends to win over most people with his presentation.

The Dems played the 26th well:

They got 1 of their own on the Tea Party line to siphon off votes from Corwin.

They ran a well liked candidate with good name recognition, even though a carpet bagger.

They were very effective with their use of "Mediscare."

The lesson here is that the GOP better pay attention to the blue collar vote in the American heartland.

This is almost completely meaningless. First, the pubbies lose one seat. Big wup, so their majority is down to 49 seats. Means even less when with a demhole senate and WH. Second, the seat will probably disappear with redistricting. The bad news is we have to listen to the demholes and mediapukes tell us how the demholes winning in a R-heavy district means everyone hates republicans again because of the Ryan budget, it’s a backlash against Republican extremism, yada, yada, yada….barf. We all know without the third party fraud in the race, the seat goes R easily.

Therein lies the danger.

The demholes will now recruit a similar fraud to split the R vote in 20 or 30 really competitive races in 2012. Fraud and deceit is their best bet, and they’re good at it. And the mediawhores will help them. I live in WNY. Anytime this election was mentioned on the radio “news”, Davis was refered to as a/the “tea-party candidate” when it was obvious to all he’s no such thing.

I find it intersting that neither candidate broke 50%. I don’t think this race is a bellweather for Tea Party Conservatives. It appears the GOP ran a RINO. Then, shazam, she got beaten by a demrat. Looks to me like many RINO and moderate voters went to the demrat. Why not? It’s merely a matter of opting for the brand name over the generic.

It's come full circle. A fake "tea party" candidate, rich and dishonest, hands an election to a democrat. Like Charlie Brown with a chance at a punt, we are afraid to get as vicious as our opponents.

The sight of Jack Davis' campaign organizer gloating after Corwin's defeat said it all.

After Paladino and Davis, I'm done hearing about the tea party.

Trust the GOP to screw their chances for 2012. Ryan’s going after medicare at this point was assinine.

No, the GOP did not run a RINO. Corwin was a perfectly good conservative candidate. She would have made an excellent member of the House of Representatives. Many TEA Party activists had preferred Bellavia, but when he didn't get the nomination he went on to endorse the obviously liberal fake TEA Party candidate - proving the Republicans made the right decision in passing him over.

There were a lot of reasons we lost this election, but one of them was a small group of butthurt TEA Party folks, including their candidate (Bellavia), who went off the reservation and endorsed a leftist in order to throw the election to the Democrat Hochul.

Medicare also played a role in this loss, and unfortunately, it is a warning that even in conservative districts the American public STILL seems unwilling to accept entitlement reforms and cuts - particularly when it comes to Medicare.

In most states the TEA Party has been a very positive force. In states like NY, unfortunately, it appears is has not been. Paladino was a joke candidate. The preferred TEA Party NY-26 candidate, Bellavia, and his butthurt supports endorsing the leftist Davis was a disaster - particular in light of the fact that they did it to make sure the Democrat won. If the TEA Party doesn't run a tighter ship and make certain it works within the confines of the Republican party in 2012, it will end up splitting the right of center vote and guaranteeing Democrats win elections in places they shouldn't.

It appears the GOP ran a RINO.

Jane Corwin is no RINO. This is not the "heavily" Republican district the national media claims it to be. It's a slightly-Republican district that is gradually trending left as upstate's middle-class moves away.

The eastern end of the district is comprised of Rochester's working-class suburbs which have been hit very hard by Kodak's shedding of some 30,000 employees and Delphi's ongoing problems. This was, unfortunately, a prime target for Jack Davis's foolish protectionist rhetoric.

Absent the third party candidate, Corwin would have won handily. Add to that the fact that Hochul is well-known in Buffalo for having done a very good job modernizing and streamlining the local DMV offices. In short, she's not perceived as a tax-and-spend Democrat -- though she may well turn out to be one.

NY is Yankee RINOland, not mainstream heartland. It is the rust belt..

I will never understand why the GOP doesn’t buy billboard space. Two or three billboards denouncing the fake Tea Party candidate would have solved that, no?
