Minnesota governor vetoes voter identification bill

(Reuters) - Democratic Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton on Thursday vetoed a bill that would have required voters to provide photo identification to cast votes.

Dayton cited a lack of broad bi-partisan support for the bill and its potential as a $23 million unfunded mandate on local governments in part for his veto. The Republican-led Legislature had sent the bill to him on Monday.

Supporters had argued the bill would strengthen the integrity of the election system in Minnesota.

Dayton said he did not believe voter fraud to be a significant problem in Minnesota and that the reason most often cited for requiring photo identification, felons voting, would not be resolved by the bill.

"We have the highest voter turnout year after year and under intense, bipartisan scrutiny, the recent statewide recounts have highlighted how reliable the results are," Dayton said in a letter notifying the Senate of his veto.

Dayton said he did not believe voter fraud to be a significant problem in Minnesota

Of course it's not significant to Dayton. It only helps DFL/Dems in that state. It's no problem at all!

To get a job

To cash a check

(And this one is funny for those who claim students don’t have one) To get into a nightclub. And we all know how many fake ones they have!

His new plan is for ATM voting machines. Cutting spending is a must. When you vote for the Democrat money comes out. Saving on administrative cost. If you vote Republican a Robber Jumps out from behind the machine and Mugs you.

I’m not a Pawlenty supporter, but it’s amazing he did as well as he did in this state.

[ONE fraudulant vote is one too many.]

Exactly. Every fraudulent vote, disenfranchises a legitimate vote!

[no citizen should be screwed over by state endorsed fraud.]

We have a problem when one party supports and defends vote fraud. If there is fraud in the vote, freedom does not exist.

What I just sent him:

Governor Dayton - How can you justify your veto of this important legislation? Certainly you are aware that in this day and age, there is NOTHING anyone can do without an ID. You can’t get a job, you can’t cash a check - these are the most basic things that relate to those you might like to consider disadvantaged. You can’t get on a plane, you can’t get into a nightclub (except for those “students” some are so worried about, because they ingeniously get lots of fake IDs.) Bottom line we live in a society where you can’t function without a photo ID, so just who is it you think doesn’t have one? Insane.

To say nothing of the4 Lutefisk brained idiots that voted this creature into office! GOD help Minnesota!! Land of 10,000 lakes, and millions of idiot voters!

Yes we do have millions of idiot voters, and due to that, hundreds of idiot politicians who idiotically resist sensible ideas like voter ID. Just remember though, there are a few of us FReepers here in enemy-occupied territory.

A minor flap over religion developed Monday, when Democratic Senate Minority Leader Tom Bakk used the word “cult” in describing the new Republican majorities.
“Their principles are so burned into their soul that it’s almost like a religion, like a cult,” Bakk, DFL-Cook, told reporters.
Two Republican senators responded in a hastily arranged news conference, where Sen. Dave Thompson called the comment “bizarre” and “unhelpful.”
“I am not ashamed of the fact that I want to maintain fiscal discipline for the citizens of the state of Minnesota,” said Thompson, a first-term Republican from Lakeville.

Leftist bastards ALWAYS say that voter fraud isn’t occurring.

What they mean is, it’s not a problem - for them.
