Bachmann Votes to Renew the Patriot Act
Michele Bachmann's Facebook Page ^ | May 26, 2011 | Michele Bachmann

Tonight, I cast an affirmative vote in the House to continue three measures which uphold our national security and are in place to protect American citizens against those seeking to do us harm. I urge you to click on the link and read about the Constitutionality of these provisions compiled by my friend and colleague, Rep. Steve King (IA-05), a member of the Judiciary Committee.

We will need a generation of savvy, strong conservatives who know how to create consensus on our issues with the RINOs, Blue Dogs, etc. that infest the Congress. That’s the reality.

We won’t ever have a conservative majority. We might get a GOP majority and a GOP Pres. at the same time, but not conservative ones. So we’ll need to use patience and persistence and win little by little. It’s best that way.

Indeed. Most criticism - if you can get anyone to even say anything substantive about it rather than just emotional, incoherent rants - aren’t about things the Patriot Act even does, that originated from far left talking points / propaganda.

Correct. It is nothing new. It just allows for investigative bodies to have the same power to go after terrorists as they already had for things like organized crime.

Thank you so much, Ken. I know Allen would not vote for ANYTHING that he thinks does not protect our freedoms and upholds our Constitution. His NO vote was obviously what was needed.

If you happened to miss Allen West on Washington Journal this morning, here it is:

Agreed.

“Conservatives still support her...”

Not necessarily. The way things are going now, I wouldn’t unless she’s my last option. I don’t know what’s going on with her now. I used to like her a lot.

A real “Patriot” Act would send suspected terrorists packing to their homeland, in a heartbeat. Revoke their visa, passport, whatever they have to be here, then bar them from America, forever.

You want tools to defeat suspected foreign terrorists on our soil? Here’s your tool. If they are suspect, no need for a wiretap, you’re outtahere! Suspicion alone, should get them removed, and barred from ever returning. Otherwise, all we have is a cat and mouse game played over the internet, and cell phones, by bungling bureaucrats, while risking our lives.

Here’s your sign!

Oh yea, buhbye Michelle!

From what I can gather from it, is that it gathers and modernizes already existing legal authorities into one package. Some of those previously existing legal authorities have been in existence for as much as 60 years and have survived numerous constitutional legal tests.

Yepper, the unPatriot Act creates the DHS, putting all these into one LE package, with no holds barred. It also authorizes the TSA, operated under the auspices of the DHS, to fondle our wives, children, mothers, and grandmothers, at airports.

Some are okay with it. I'm not.

So who do you suggest we support? I’m still leaning towards Bachmann due to the poor field of candidates/ potential candidates.

Sorry, I don't believe anything POLITICO puts out.

Steve King was the one who wrote the piece in Politico defending the renewal.

You are absolutely right. The one thing that would truly work isn't even discussed.

And bungling bureaucrats -- risking our lives and flushing our money down the toilet... well, that's the story of the Human Race.

In America we thought we were different. We thought we built a system that put the Bungling Bureaucrats under the control of The People, via The Constitution.

Well, we did. For awhile. But it's come unraveled. And it's not just Obama -- though he's lovin' it and accelerating it. It started decades ago.

Ten Big Problems with the PATRIOT Act

1: The government can conduct "sneak and peek" searches in which agents enter your home or business and search your belongings without informing you until long after.

2: Government agents can force libraries and bookstores to disclose the titles of books that you've purchased or borrowed and can demand the identity of anyone who has purchased or borrowed certain books. The government can also prosecute libraries and bookstores for informing you that the search occurred or even for informing you that an inquiry was made.

3: Federal agents are authorized to use hidden devices to trace the telephone calls or emails of people who are not even suspected of a crime. The FBI is also permitted to use its Magic Lantern technology to monitor everything you do on your computer -- recording not just the websites you visit but EVERY SINGLE KEYSTROKE as well.

4: Government agents are permitted to arrest and detain individuals "suspected" of terrorist activities and to hold them INDEFINITELY, WITHOUT CHARGE, and WITHOUT an ATTORNEY.

5: Federal agents are permitted to conduct full investigations of American citizens and permanent legal residents simply because they have participated in activities protected by the First Amendment, such as writing a letter to the editor or attending a peaceful rally.

6: Law enforcement agents are permitted to listen in on discussions between prisoners and their attorneys, thus denying them their Constitutional right to confidential legal counsel.

7: Terrorism suspects may be tried in secret military tribunals where defendants have no right to a public trial, no right to trial by jury, no right to confront the evidence, and no right to appeal to an independent court. In short, the Constitution does not apply.

8: Allows the CIA to spy on American citizens, a power that has previously been denied to this international espionage organization.

9: In addition to the Patriot Act, the Bush administration has given us Operations TIPS, a government program that encourages citizens to spy on each other and to report their neighbors' activities to the authorities. Fortunately, Operation TIPS seems to have been recalled to the factory -- at least for now.

10: Total Information Awareness [TIA] will link commercial and government databases so that the DOD can immediately put its finger on any piece of information about you that it wants.

If that doesn't bother you, you are on the worng site.

You are wrong:

The NSA warrantless surveillance controversy (AKA “Warrantless Wiretapping”) concerns surveillance of persons within the United States during the collection of foreign intelligence by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) as part of the war on terror. Under this program, referred to by the Bush administration as the “terrorist surveillance program”,[1] part of the broader President’s Surveillance Program, the NSA is authorized by executive order to monitor, without search warrants, phone calls, Internet activity (Web, e-mail, etc.), text messaging, and other communication involving any party believed by the NSA to be outside the U.S., even if the other end of the communication lies within the U.S. Critics, however, claimed that it was in an effort to attempt to silence critics of the Bush Administration and their handling of several hot button issues during its tenure.
