How is it selfish? He probably paid for this trip and the guides/gear etc months in advance.

CORRECTION!

Due to my haste in posting, I did not include anything in the author's name field for the article. I have asked the mods to fix this.

The real author of the article is Dan Frommer. NOT me.

Cheers!

"John Delaney, founder and CEO of Intrade, the prediction market, has died while trying to climb Mt. Everest. "

I bet he never saw that coming.

The ultimate irony would be if intrade had any bets on his climbing the mountain successfully or not.

If there were, I hope the site had the taste to remove them...

Prayers up.

I can’t imagine a new daddy heading out to climb a mountain, but that’s just me. It’s also sad there will be no grave to visit.

Because he was too busy being a dead rich s.o.b to worry about his family.

He left behind a 3-day-old daughter, and his body will be left on the mountain.

What a maroon.

And how far in advance of the trip do you think his wife got pregnant?

I bet the girl grows up HATING the song "The Bear Climbed Over the Mountain".

Which, incidentally, is also known as "Wellington's Victory" by Beethoven, and shares the music with "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow."

NO cheers, unfortunately.

Why are you calling him selfish? When you book a trip to everest you stay there for 2 months during the season you climb, not to mention he probably paid for the trip which i think is around 20 grand possibly before his child was conceived. Everest takes a huge commitment, and it’s not like he knew the exact hour or day his daughter would be born. Also if he did pay for the trip he might not have been able to get a refund, or he could have been there for longer than he thought due to weather or some other circumstance. Seems prudent to judge someone when you don’t know all the details.

And, the money was more important to him than the birth of his child? That's not selfish?

I made it to the births of all six of my children - that's a summit I'm proud to have climbed and it binds me to my children irrevocably. This guy had his priorities all wrong. Sorry he lost his life in a vain, self-aggrandizing and failing quest that led him to abdicate his familial responsibilities. His widow and child don't even have the consolation of a grave-site to visit. What a legacy!

Was there an Intrade market on the likelihood of him making it to the top?

When his daughter grows up, she can climb Everest and visit his freeze-dried remains.
