‘Weinergate’ (The Congressman keeps changing his story... was it a hack, or was it a prank?)
National Review ^ | 05/31/2011 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 05/31/2011 9:52:19 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Over the weekend I said that I suspect this will not end well for Congressman Weiner. I still think I’m right.

Rep.Weiner stands accused of sending a lewd picture to a young girl via Twitter. He says he didn’t do it. At first his office said his Twitter account was “hacked.” Now he says it was all a “prank.” This is an important change in language because to claim his account was hacked is to claim he was a victim of a crime. Meanwhile a prank is something he can wave away.

Meanwhile, the Left has been all over the place. They seem torn between wanting this all to go away and wanting to pin it on Andrew Breitbart or some other conservatives to be named later. That’s a problem because Breitbart et al. seem perfectly happy to have an investigation.

Meanwhile, the only person who wants to let the story die is Weiner, which suggests he’s the one who has done something wrong or knows something he doesn’t want others to know. Even some at Daily Kos realize this is a problem. And while the MSM seems perfectly inclined to follow Weiner’s lead, there are just too many other outlets that will not let go of the story.

I honestly have no idea what happened, but I do know that Anthony Weiner is exactly the kind of Democrat who would sensationalize a story like this if the politician involved was a Republican. And you can be sure the press wouldn’t have to be dragged kicking and screaming to cover it.

I don’t think this is a colossal scandal, but the selective standards of the MSM drive me crazy. Recall that the NY-26 race we’ve just finished analyzing was a result of the fact that a sitting congressman had to resign because he sent a picture of himself without shirt to a woman on Craigslist. In 2006, Nancy Pelosi used Mark Foley’s scandal to help win back the Congress.

And what if Weiner’s innocent and this is a dirty trick by some right-wingers? Don’t we need to know that? Shouldn’t they be exposed? (You know what I mean! Do you people have any idea how hard it is not to pepper this post with double entendre?)

At minimum, it seems to me that if the Left wants to claim Weiner was set up, then they are honor bound to support a full investigation.

accused of sending a lewd picture to a young girl an adult via Twitter ...

Let's not get overwrought, Jonah. We're not talking about my 10-year-old here.

I think Anthony’s Weiner has started its own Twitter account.

It tweets things like:

“I was sent to a female?”

I’m glad the NR finally (belatedly) covered it. I wonder if Rush will cover it? Drudge hasn’t. I am disappointed with the so-called conservative media so far. It is basically “only” bloggers who have covered it it depth. There very possibly may have been crimes committed and it’s treated as a joke or ignored.

Is Rep Weiner using taxpayer funds to market his genitals?

And since his marketing efforts cross state lines, are they goverened by the Commerce Clause?

If so, can Congress regulate his weiner?

Ok, let’s just keep our heads on this and remember, it’s the seriousness of the CHARGE that matters, not if he’s guilty or not.

i think the point he’s trying to make is the omnipresent MSM double standard and not that the girl was somehow violated by the tweet. That being said, my 22 yo daughter would be taken aback at receiving such a pic via twitter. Not all young twenty somethings are worldly skanks.

Perhaps not! However, what is being discussed is the behavior of a U.S. Congressman who is a married man, who may have sent a lewd photo of himself to a young woman! Let’s go out on a limb and ask were this to involve a conservative U.S. Congressman - what reaction then???

Are you guys apologizing for Weiner? You guys think it’s fine for a sitting congressman to be sending wiener pics to girls? Just because he’s a Dem?

That was weiner’s skinny wiener and thighs. He switched to “prank” because his defense lawyer has told him it would be a felony to report a false crime. Weiner needs to be grilled over this.

I agree with the general point. I was simply thinking of the confusion that results from treating a college student as an adult one minute, and as a child the next. I think the inability to establish adulthood vs. childhood is a serious social issue. But that’s neither here nor there, really ...

My 20-year-old daughter would laugh hysterically at anyone pathetic enough to Tweet her his Weiner ... although it couldn’t happen, since she’s not on Twitter sharing her daily activity anyway.

If you lift the little finger of your right hand, the questions marks stop appearing.

That said ... what reaction? The MSM would go ballistic, but anyone who gives a flying freep about them, at this point, can't call himself a conservative Congressman. He's just a Republican, spit when you say that. Republicans caught messing around have resigned. They didn't have to. They could have said, "Bleep you - I'm running for reelection. If you like my voting record, vote for me."

Well, since I hit the question mark tab three times, I guess I need not worry about lifting my little finger, now do I???

Thank you for making my points for me.
