National Guard called to Springfield
WWLP ^

Posted on 06/01/2011 6:35:46 PM PDT by matt04

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Thomas Walsh, aide to Mayor Domenic Sarno told 22News that the City of Springfield has requested that the National Guard come to the city, where there has been damage from a tornado.

Walsh said that all motorists are advised to stay at home and not venture out onto the roads, in order to give emergency workers time to get to where they need to go.

Walsh said that the National Guard is on its way.

The State Police Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) has been called in to help search damaged buildings for the possibility that anyone is trapped. Traffic into the city is being limited, as highway ramps leading to the city have been closed by State Police.

Now there is even less of a reason to go to Springfield. That’s a mighty rough town. I can imagine there will be many who see this as an opportunity for gain.

"F0? F1?"

Springfield Massachusetts is a hard-luck town on it's best day.

Prayers to all.

When exterior and interior walls are knocked down that is by definition winds in the realm of EF-2 or EF-3 at least.

Very bad storm by any standard.

Amazing pictures. From the local press reports Munson and the surrounding area seems to as bad, if not worse. It was just reported that several nearby communities, with very little storm damage will not get power back until Tuesday at 11PM. They still have no idea of what the damage is in the Munson and Palmer areas.

National Grid is reporting that the towns of East Longmeadow, Hampden, Holland, Brimfield and Wilburham have close to 100% power outages with estimated restoration of Tues. June 2 at 11PM. Munson, Palmer, Brimfield and Whales do have slightly lower percentages in the dark as of now, but they do not have a Restoration time yet.

This was a serous storm, and I don’t think we have even come close to seeing the damage outside of Springfield yet.

That's just incredible damage.

A lot of families in the Springfield area don't have the resources to recover from such a blow.

I have family in East Longmeadow, West Springfiled and Wibraham...I know better than to even try calling tonite. Prayers ofr the communities affected. New Englanders will pull together and help eachother out (except the looters in Springfield I’ve heard reports of already). I’m glad they called in the National Guard. My aunt is in an assisted living facility there (Reed’s Landing), if anyone has news, please post.
