Just now? Didn’t feel a thing. (south central mo.)
Is this one near New Madrid? As a kid, I grew up in the western part of KY—about 150 miles straight line from it. We had tremors all the time. Very common.
0210 this morning...
I think that’s a fair distance from the New Madrid zone.
This one gently rattled the debris on my nightstand. Still, there was no mistaking that it HAD to be a quake, even in the middle of the night.
(SW St. Louis county).
So this is how death will begin when the New Madrid Fault finally cracks wide open?

Death rattle... if the New Madrid goes, life as we know it will be over.
OK,Didn’t catch that part. Still didn’t feel anything, I was awake then, but being a California expatriate, it’d have to be a 5.6 for me to even notice. ;)
I tend to lean toward the theory that there may never be another “big one” on the New Madrid fault. Some geologists theorize that past large eartquakes were the result of crustal rebound after the retreat of the glaciers in the north.
Apparently there is evidence of super quakes in the midwest that seem to follow the retreat of the ice sheets.
Just a theory.
>>>The New Madrid zone is down around the MO Bootheel. This is a fair distance away from there
Close enough.
Not sure if it is part of New Madrid fault.
But, that area is very rural — small towns 20 miles apart, etc.
New Madrid is a failed rift much futher to the south.
If seismic activity is a release of stress, and if every action has an equal and opposite reaction, its within the realm of plausibility that stress could be increased in the New Madrid region as a result of this activity.
You are grossly overanalyzing this. A 3.9 is a fairly minor earthquake, and this was a good distance away from the NM zone. If you look at maps, there have been minor earthquakes peppered about the region to the NW of the zone for some time, as is the norm throughout much of the US>
Aw, you had one of them cute little baby quakes. How sweet.
This is a typical day around Japan. I miss the 6.0+ quakes because we usually
don’t even feel these little ones.

Neat. I didn’t know the last biggie was that long ago. You’re about ready to pop too. How many of the little ones do you usually get every week?
