POLL: Palin, Romney Take Lead Among Iowa
Conservatives As Early Race Tightens

Sarah Palin and recently announced candidate Mitt Romney vaulted to the top of the G.O.P. presidential field, according to a new poll of Iowa conservatives. The poll, conducted by the 2012 Iowa Report, finds Palin and Romney sharing the lead with 19% support, followed closely by Herman Cain (15%) and Michele Bachmann (12%).

Romney’s announcement of his campaign and high national profile seems to be resonating with Iowa conservatives, who moved him from single digits to the front of the pack in just one week. Palin, who continued to grab headlines even as Romney was announcing his candidacy, is showing staying power in the Hawkeye State even though she has not declared her candidacy.

For the first time, Herman Cain did not lead the Iowa Report poll, perhaps due to higher profile names grabbing the headlines. Still, he finished second among likely caucus goers. Other key findings:

--Likely caucus goers are very divided with no individual getting more than 16% of the vote and 30% now saying they are “not sure” who will ultimately win.
--Ron Paul finished third among likely caucus goers at 15%.
--Michele Bachmann steadied her support among Iowa conservatives, but trails Palin for the second consecutive week.

The 2012 Iowa Report Poll, a project of Grassfire Nation, is a special survey of Iowa conservatives conducted weekly to help measure where Iowa conservatives stand on the 2012 Republican presidential field.

I like the way the coservative candidates take so much of the total.

Hahahaha! She hasn't spent a day there since when? She hasn't campaigned there, knocked on doors, attended hog roasts and coffee klatches, no fundraising, nothing, and she's tied for first place with a guy who finished second overall last time? If I were Mitt, I'd just chuck it all and go sail on my yacht and play with the grandkids. He hasn't got a prayer (pun intended) of winning the evangelical, charismatic, pentecostal and hardshell Christian vote. Which means Iowa, the South, the Southwest (except Utah and Nevada) so why waste time & money?

My wish...

First, if all candidates other than Romney work on getting him out, that will free up a lot of contributions to go to others. He’s the Republican empty suit that really has to exit the campaign first.

And conservative Repubs, once again, be nice to each other. Don’t listen to your campaign consultants if they tell you to be nasty - fire them. After a while, they’ll all get the idea.

Compete with slightly different ideas, compete on your principles, try to show how good you are, not how bad the other guy is.

Look more closely, it was a poll of Iowa ‘conservatives’.

The movie hasn't been released in Iowa yet either.

OK....asking my fellow Freepers’ opinion here; a serious question.

How do you think a Palin/Bachmann ticket would do? Personally, I’d love it. Is America ready for an all-female ticket?

I'm aware that we should vote for whoever we thought the best to do the job, but conservatives need to look at the numbers. Liberal media is not the only reason Republican keeps having a not-so-conservative as their candidate. Conservatives beating each other also contributes to that.

I don’t know if you’ve been keeping track of recent news, but Bachmann just stabbed Sarah in the back in a very public way through her new campaign manager, the insider sleazebag Ed Rollins.

Doesn't make sense. Bachmann brings nothing to the ticket that Palin doesn't already have.

Tough to take a poll seriously that can’t even spell “Mit(t)” correctly. All these polls are worthless anyway until we know who is running and there have been some widely viewed debates with all the candidates.

I know this poll cannot be right because Bachmann was born in Waterloo, IA.

"Tough to take a poll seriously that can’t even spell “Mit(t)” correctly."

It follows the upward trend of Palin found in other polls. Typos are dime a dozen nowadays.
