Chief of Staff: We’ll Try to Make Next War Short
Arutz Sheva ^ | 9/6/11 | Gil Ronen

Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz said Thursday that “In any future warfare there will be an effort to bring about a swift result and to cut down the time that the fighting lasts, because we know that our ability to decide the battle depends on the Home Front’s resilience.”

Photo Gantz spoke at a ceremony at the Chief of Staff’s bureau in Tel Aviv, in which Brigadier General Eyal Eizenberg was promoted to the rank of major general. Eizenberg will replace Maj. Gen Yair Golan as Home Front Commander in the coming days. Golan will become Head of Northern Command and replace Maj. Gen Gadi Eizenkut.

Golan has completed three and a half years commanding the Home Front, which has become an increasingly important position as the IDF prepares for a war involving massive missile fire on Israel’s civilian population. The Home Front Minister, Matan Vinai, and the former head of Miltary Intelligence, have predicted that Tel Aviv would be a front in the next war.

Golan called the job “fascinating and important” and said – “the Home Front is us.”

Eizenberg is currently Gaza Division Commander, a position he held during the IDF’s anti-terror campaign in Gaza in late 2008. He said he was aware of the heavy responsibility on his shoulders.

This time they might try entering Ghaza from the East and amphibiously from the West, joining hands in the South. The way they did it in 2008 was guaranteed to to produce an overlong conflict.

The doctrine of disproportionate response is there
for a good reason, it works. A lesson we have forgotten.

“What this country needs is a short, victorious war to stem the tide of revolution.”

V.K. Plehve, Russian Minister of the Interior
to General A.N. Kuroparfon, Minister of War,
1903, on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War

We all know how well that worked out.

Massive conventional preparations would be wise, as would reaching out to persons around the world, not necessarily just governments.

The law of unintended consequences ... very powerful in history.

Israel’s 1982 war in Lebanon was meant to be a limited, quick war. Which it was ... until it became long and unsuccessful.

Thank G-d only the Israelis make such mistakes! For, you know, this Libya campaign is going to be fast and effective. Only days, you know. Not even weeks ...

The list of “short, victorious wars” that turned out to be only one if either is very long.

WWI on all sides, for starters. Home by Christmas and all that.

Our own Civil War, again by both sides. Sherman was nearly institutionalized as crazy in the early months for publicly stating the war would be long and bloody.

Probably most wars have been started when at least one side thinks it will be short and victorious.

If they make it a six hour war, nobody will even notice there was a war. Cast Lead and Yom Kipur each took three weeks. The rule with Israel is, if it makes a good movie, people like it. If it doesn’t, people don’t. Cast a Giant Shadow and Exodus were good movies, so the world liked Israel. The Six Day War would have made a good movie, but none so far have been made. It was so short people thought it was the movie.

You’re joking, but you’re right: A movie about the Six Day War would generate a lot of sympathy for Israel. A *lot*.

Hmmm...

The technology has been around since the 1940s, from what I have read it does work.
Those that hold Israel in disdain will not come down on the country as much as they would if Israel were to use some more destructive arsenal.
Do they have it who knows, do they have nuclear weapons, who knows?
