A teenage girl was killed and four men were wounded when two gunmen opened fire on the Brighton Beach boardwalk that was crowded with people seeking relief from Thursday's heat, police said.
The shooting erupted at about 5:30 p.m. at Brighton 4th Street and Brighton 6th Street.
Police spokesman Paul Browne says the shooting occurred during an altercation on the beach.
He did not know if the people shot were intended targets or bystanders. He described the situation as "chaotic.''
Police believe it may be gang-related.
The 16-year-old girl who died was identified as Tysha Jones. She was shot under the left armpit and died at Coney Island Hospital, where a 23-year-old man was in critical condition with a stomach wound.
Also wounded were a 21-year-old, a 25-year-old and a 26-year-old. They were taken to Lutheran Hospital.
Police were questioning some people but declined to say whether they were potential suspects. No arrests have been made.
Witnesses told NBC New York that the boardwalk was crowded and everyone seemed to be in good spirits when suddenly eight or nine shots rang out. Crowds began running, and one parent who was there with a dozen children said they all hid under the boardwalk until police arrived.
Pat Singer, the founder of the Brighton Neighborhood Association, said the hot weather brought hordes of young people to the beach Thursday. "It's massive chaos,'' she said.
Saya Suzuki, 30, was just about to sit down inside a boardwalk restaurant with her 6-year-old daughter, Sonya, when the shooting began just outside. Suzuki told The New York Times she heard about six shots, then grabbed her daughter and saw two teenagers run by her.
"I just picked up my daughter and got away from the bullets,'' she said. "It happened so quickly and I had to protect my daughter.''
"I was running with my kids, running with my kids from gunshots. Can you believe that? After a wonderful day," the unidentified mother told NBC New York.
I’m surprised barry’s news network didn’t try to bury this one.
And they’re all dummying up. Stop Snitchin, donchaknow. Nobody knows nothin, nobody saw nothin, I ain’t sayin nothin.
And the poh-leece only care about white peoples.
Is this a ramping up of the “needed” social unrest that the left requires in order to gain even more control?
Either Amish or Mormons .
in Brighton Beach it could be Russian Mafia
You know, when I first read this last night, I was actually hoping that would be the case.
But, no.
But... But... They have wonderfully strict gun control in NYC. They don’t let those hick nuts that support the 2nd amendment influenced them. Bloomberg has made them all safe from wicked guns. I don’t get it. How could this happen!?! </SARC>
HOLDER’S PEEPS, at it again.
And summer’s just starting - how many weeks will this crap go on before someone has the guts to call a spade a spade?
Political correctness, and its ugly stepchild (racial intimidation) are killing the country.
I expect we'll be hearing about doing away with that day off from school.
Boardwalk was crowded and nobody did anything?.
It’s those darned Stoltzfus and Lapp families. They’re at it again. Ever since Rachel spurned brother Ezekiel, at the barn raising last summer, thing’s just ain’t the same. If they keep up this activity, acting like the English, and using the gun of the hand, then they’re sure to be shunned,y’know!
you’re right, they don’t look Russian to me
Tysha Jones was struck by a bullet when a gunman opened fire on the bustling Brooklyn boardwalk, leaving the high school student dead.
That restaraunt was always full UNTIL then. Now you see maybe a dozen cars there. There had been complaints about loud, rude behavior and crude language long before this though. Some people will never change because they think it's cool to be stupid.
That is exactly where Obama belongs, with his ghetto buddies.
Police believe it may be gang-related.What would we do without the deep thinkers in the police?
