Would a Rick Perry Campaign Ruin Romney's Chances?
NY Magazine ^ | June 11, 2011 | Not Stated

As Perry flirts with a White House run, Mitt Romney - the man who would be most threatened by a Perry candidacy - is making the tactical decisions of a front-runner. Romney announced that he'll skip the Ames Straw Poll in Iowa this summer.

Perry shares many of Romney's major selling points: He's a smart, fiscally prudent pro-business guy with gubernatorial experience. Plus, he was in the Air Force, worked on the family cotton-farming business, and is a personal cheapskate - the campaign ads write themselves.

And he's good at creating jobs, which is what Americans want regardless of party affiliation right now: The L.A. Times points out that "Perry's state has created more new American jobs in the last four years alone than all the other 49 states combined," a soundbite-ready stat. He also didn't back a universal health-care bill.

Perry or Romney, let me see... I don't see that it's a hard choice.

Same with Perry vs Obama -- the most important factor in 2012 will be jobs and economy.

Egads, Perry will ruin the GOP. He is not, never was, and never will be a conservative. He's a lib RINO at best and that only during election years. This from a Texan who voted not for him but against his opponents twice.

Perhaps Perry and Romney can play the roles of Romney/Huckabee ‘08 and wind up allowing a trusted conservative (rather than that RINO son of a bitch McLame) to win the nomination. That would be just, just wonderful.

I would love it if some Texas FReepers chimed in with some insight as to whether Rick Perry is the real deal.

I have seen Perry trashed here on FR but that is par for the course these days.

Perry is in my second tier (after the real Conservatives like Cain and Palin). He has a lot of baggage but he is heads and tails above Romney, Rudy, and Paul. His negatives are the HPV vaccination, Trans Texas Corridor, and In State Tuition for Children of Illegals. Positives are he did try to militarize the border with State guard and give Texas law enforcement the power to enforce immigration laws (Operation Rio Grande and Operation Linebacker), both were blocked by the federal government. He is also pro-life and pro-second amendment. He has also fought against all attempt to create a state income tax.

Still, the illegal tuition and TTC issues are deal breakers for a lot of folks so it is just a matter of seeing how the primary plays out.

I think he will be a lot like Pawlenty and Santorum, he’ll get support if there aren’t more Conservative candidates to choose from just to keep the liberal ones out.

He is like a George W Bush candidate. A lot of negatives but you know when it comes down to the CiC role, he will have the brass ones needed.

It seems that Perry is between Romney on the left and Palin/Bachmann/Cain on the right.

That might make him the go-to candidate to keep from splitting the GOP wide open.

Perry has a lot of negatives, especially regarding the Trans Highway and border issues. But he seems to be more conservative than that other Texas — the compassionate conservative one.

At least, he isn't an old party retread and does come with substantial Gubernatorial executive experience, rather than Senatorial bloviator experience.

One major concern I would have with a Perry nomination -- would he select Bush brother Jeb as his VP? If so, he deserves to lose!

I would love it if some Texas FReepers chimed in with some insight as to whether Rick Perry is the real deal.

He is mixed (see prior post). He is a lot like W on positions. Texas FReepers are very particular and picky. Is he better than Romney, Rudy, or Paul, absolutely. Is he to the left of Palin, Cain, Pawlenty, and Santorum, no doubt. I doubt very few will have a problem pulling the lever for him in the general but getting through the primary will be tough.

I will take Perry over Obama or Romney any day.. I am not sure why there are so many are Perry bashers. Its almost as if some think Perry is worst than obama! If we conservatives dont get together on a candidate, Obama is going to win again! Of course I would rather see Allen West as our candidate, but so far he says he isnt running. I would also like Palin but I dont know that she will run. Wouldnt all of you rather have Perry than Obama or even Romney?

Wouldn’t have an effect either way.

Myth is going to destroy his own candidacy, as will the moderate Perry.

Sarah will wipe the floor with both of them.

Like it or not, Romney is leading all the Republican primary candidate polls.

Would a Rick Perry Campaign Ruin Romney's Chances?

Romney's record and positions has ruined Romney's chances. He'd be better off switching parties and challenging 0bama for the nomination.

There’s still lots of time and the debate will be healthy. We don’t need to rally around one candidate yet.

I think Perry doesn’t get all the credit for what he did try to do on the border. Look up Operation Rio Grande and Operation Linebacker. He attempted to put the State Guard on the border and authorize State police to enforce immigration laws. In both cases he was shot down by the Federal Government as being out of his jurisdiction. He is mixed. He seems to want to control the traffic across, but once they are here, he has taken a weaker hand (such as tuition for illegals).

Still, compared to Obama...

“This from a Texan who voted not for him but against his opponents twice.”

That is the point. Besides the fact that Perry simulates conservatism in a more convincing manner, you -could- bring yourself to vote for him, as minimally acceptable compared to the Democrat. For many, Romney is just entirely too phony. Many have described Perry as an opportunist. Personally, I regard Romney as far worse than that. He comes across to me as a willful and determined saboteur, ideologically, and as a vicious, grandiose malefactor as an individual. I -could- vote for Perry against Obama. I will vote “Other” if it is between Romney and Obama.

Perry IMO is not a true conservative. He is however more conservative than West coast or Northeast republicans to be sure.

If it were a Perry / Obozo race, I'd vote for Perry. I would not get my hopes up that he'd have a conservative agenda in office.

I think he'd do the middle of the road two step kinda like ol Bush baby.

Romney always does well in polls (see last election) but it doesn’t translate to votes. In the 08 election, he was almost always near the top, just like Rudy. We see what happened to them then.
