A violent night in Chicago leaves at least four dead, drawing a response from Chicago's new Police Superintendent. Three of the murders occurred in the Lawndale neighborhood. One in West Garfield Park.
37-year-old Nicole Robinson and her boyfriend were sitting in a car in the 27-hundred block of Polk when they were shot several times by someone in a passing car. Friends say they don’t understand the violence.
“I can’t see how anyone would take her life,” said one friend.
Another said, “It’s impossible for anyone not to love Nicole.”
Of the nine shootings and four murders overnight, six of the victims were teenagers.
Chicago’s new Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy spoke at King High School today on the south side. “Crime isn’t going to stop because we turned on a light,” he said. McCarthy said that it’s going to stop because of the systems the police department puts in place to make it happen. “It’s not about one thing we do, it’s about everything we do,” he added.
On Saturday, two hundred teenagers began a ten-week basketball league sponsored by the Rainbow Push Coalition. The basketball league is an attempt to keep the boys on the right track and out of trouble.
“My son’s not necessarily afraid,” said one parent. She added she was afraid because she said she knows what can happen on the streets.
Superintendent McCarthy says the beat cop is the cornerstone of his policing plan.

How about cutting the loses, firebombing the city and starting over?
Absent fathers, welfare mothers. ...for starters.
Every large city with a large population of blacks has this same problem understanding the problem.
The problem is simple, the solution is harder.
Anyone who mentions it is racist.
Sounds like it could be a gang initiation.

Chicago is on track for 384 homicides in 2011, 11% less than in 2010. There were 435 in 2010 and 188 by June 11, 2010 vs. 166 by June 11, 2011. The next three months will truly determine if 2011 is an improvement over 2010.

When the financial rug is yanked out from under Chicago, that town will burn.
This is the simplest explanation. Occasionally a gang bent on punishing another gang will mistake the car of an uninvolved party for one occupied by the other gang.
And, much of the surrounding area.
There are almost as many African-Americans living in New York City as there people of any background living in Chicago, yet NYC has a murder rate of 6.5 homicides per 100,000 of population vs. Chicago's rate of 16.1 per 100,000.
That's proportionally 250% of NYC's homicides.
For another example Houston's demographics are almost the exact same as NYC by proportion: roughly 45%/35%/25% White/Hispanic/Black.
Yet Houston has proportionally twice as many homicides as NYC and almost 25% less than Chicago.
Regarding NYC, is the crime rate there a legacy of Rudy Giuliani’s, or is something else at play there?
Isn’t someone (don’t recall who) keeping a ping list on the Great Chicago Crime Wave of 2011? If anyone knows who that is, could they ping them.
Giuliani is wearing off and the numbers are worsening - but I do believe that the policing revolution made the difference.
I would also add that cities with growing populations seem to buck the crime trends - declining cities like Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Baltimore, Philadelphia seem to become increasingly violent.
An interesting study is Memphis - for a while there it seemed to be growing, but over the past few years population has dipped to 1980 levels while violent crime has dipped somewhat as well. Homcides per 100K in Chicago are 16.1 with an African-American demographic that is proportionally half of Memphis' (31% vs. 63%), while Memphis' rate is 14.3 per 100,000.
There's more to this than race.
