A Putnam County man mauled by two pit bulls last week died late Wednesday afternoon after being taken off life support. Roy McSweeney, 74, suffered brain damage from severe blood loss that occurred when the dogs severed one arm, partially removed the other and attacked his face, said Jennifer Biewend, his family's attorney. Capt. Johnny Greenwood of the Sheriff's Office said he was pronounced dead at 4:18 p.m.

I've been laughed at for packing when I'm out in the yard. This seems like a good reason to continue.

So, pretty much just a flesh wound.

One arm was off and they had to amputate the other one.

I can't imagine living with no arms at my age anyway, there are already too mny things I can't do any more, so maybe he is better off now.

Very, very sad.

So, are the dog’s owners up for manslaughter charges, now?

The -should- be.

In FL, if your dogs attack someone who has come on your property without your permission, the dogs cannot be certified dangerous.

If they leave the property and attack someone, then they are dangerous.

I ran into this problem a couple of months ago when a pit bull (with jewels intact and almost 100 lbs) attacked my cat on my property. He traveled a long way to do it. I miss my buddy kitty something awful. Animal control came to me to find info to go after the dog owner.

I have two working breed dogs to protect the property, and the sheriff clarified this for me.

I can tell you AC in FL is terribly understaffed and finds it hard to follow up on all but the worst cases

Murder charges should be brought against the dogs owner and property owner.

First, no one should have to live in fear on their own property.

Second, the dogs were clearly very dangerous and little was done to contain them.

Manslaughter at a minimum.

Multiple attacks on different people by the dogs.

McSweeney's family has an attorney? Civil suit is already in progress -- and the lawyer will wind up owning anything of value the dog's owner has or ever will have.

I love dogs but this is enough— this breed is deadly and can’t be controlled. What happened with this elderly man and countless mauled and destroyed children cannot be allowed to continue. People aren’t allowed to keep uncaged tigers.

You’re a real comedian, funny boy. You ought to be ashamed. These pit bulls and their owners ought to be shot.

breeds dont kill people....Dogs do

each dog needs to be evaluated individually...people who train pit bulls for the ring dangle kittens in the face of them and then let them tear said kittens apart....it is training...

Lots of despicable idiots out there that are the cause of unspeakable maiming, and death...over more than 50 years of dog ownership, my dogs would not hurt a person, another ‘friendly’ dog or a cat...

About the same time and not far away in Hawthorne a man was killed with a pick axe by his daughter while his wife, her mother watched.

Pit Bulls and/or gators would be reason enough!

The pit bull breed needs to end. I’m certain the owner of these dogs said something along the lines of “My dogs would never hurt anyone, they are gentle!”

The breed itself was developed to be vicious.

There are only two kinds of pit bulls. Those that have attacked humans and those that will attack humans.

Border Collie mauls boy

I own a border collie.

BLACK LAB mauls boy

A Black lab? REALLY?

Meanwhile, I have 2 pits in my dog obedience training class, and they are the best students. Very attentive and smart.

My border collie had part of her ear ripped off from a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. A corgi!

It's not the dog, it's the owner. Bully breeds like pits, dobies, and rotties need consistent and firm leadership in the home. They are not dogs that can be left to lay around the house without exercise or mental stimulation.

My uncle's 6 year old purebred pit bull was born into conformation and regularly places in state shows. He will run alongside me on my bike for miles and it just a big slobberhound.

Pit bulls are predisposed to aggression, but with proper leadership, ownership, discipline, and attention, they are as loyal and well-behaved as any other breed.

They would be held criminally responsible in my state. It was codified into law a few years back after an elderly lady and her little dog were ripped to pieces by two Pit Bulls running loose. Happened not one mile from my front door. The law makes no distinction as to breed. If your dog (any breed) injures or kills somebody, you will face criminal charges. Since the law was passed, “problem” dogs became a problem only for their owners. Just this week, a local man was found dead in his townhouse. Killed by his own two Pit Bulls. They had attacked him before. He was stupid enough to keep them, and paid the price.

Prayers for this man. I knew when I read the original post about this happening, he would have a rough time medically. What bothers me is how vicious and violent this attack must have been and how much suffering this man went through for fifteen days. Prayers for his family.
