Haley Barbour urges Republicans not to let the tea party become a third party

From dynamic presidential hopefuls such as Rep. Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain to rank-and-file party activists from across the country, Republicans who gathered in New Orleans Friday all pledged their fealty to the cause of defeating President Barack Obama in 2012.

But Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a former national party chairman, delivered a stern warning to Republican Leadership Conference delegates: Don't look for perfection in the potential nominees and don't even think about drafting a third-party candidate when the nomination fight is done.

"Don't get hung up on purity," he said. "In politics, purity is a loser. ... In this business, it is unity that wins elections. ... Barack Obama has worn out three sets of knee pads down his knees praying for the tea party to become a third party, because he can't lose."

I will never vote for the bastard Romney, and anyone who tells me otherwise can go to hell!

Exactly. The fiscal conservatives and the RINO elites need to accept the real conservative candidates. They need to stop insisting on pure candidates.

It is quite possible that the RNC is becoming the 3rd party.

I'd say that it is entirely up to the GOP. Either get with the program or face the consequences....whatever they may be.

The Republican party does not get it. Until they are virtually wiped out, I don't think they will respond to those they pretend to represent.

It is way past time for term limits.

Romney is not going to get the Republican nod to be be the GOP nominee!!! End of story!!! Nor will the media dictate same!!! This game is not yet really underway. More players will come forward. The electoral success of the 2010 MidTerms will look like a Sunday School Picnic compared to beating the Democrats will receive in November, 2012!!! A citizen revolution is afoot and growing every day. Obama best resign because, truthfully he is toast!!!

We've had recurring problems with the so-called Republican Establishment over the years.

They demand perfection in their candidate ~ that he not be a Holy Roller, that he not be a Catholic, that he not be Jewish, that he not have ........, etc.

And that's what we've gotten. Sometimes even that hasn't been enough and they walk away and do not support the campaign.

Poor Barry Goldwater couldn't be Episcopal enough for their tastes. Our last guy, though, McCain, seems to have met the religious test by marrying an ol'gal whose family owned the biggest beer distributorship in Arizona ~ like it's difficult to get more inside the Establishment's parameters than that ~ or you could be the winning general in WWII, or perhaps a big Commie fighter like Nixon ~ that used to get you in but I'm not sure anymore.

Currently the Republican Establishment has full control of things at the RNC.

In what should be the easiest Presidential election we've ever faced I PREDICT that we will lose, and most likely because of the candidate's religious affiliations.

Can't be Lutheran, and what's this about "baptized Catholic, raised Pentecostal" business? Oh, my, they'll be standing on their heads and spinning like tops if we nominate Sarah.

Gov Barbour misses the point, it’s not purity, its trust.

We’ve been stabbed in the back so many times by phoney conservatives who say one thing to get elected and promptly squish and sell-out.

I can support somebody who is not 100% in agreement with me - heck, if that were the standard, I’d never vote for anybody. I can’t and won’t countenance a flake flip-flopper willing to say or do anything to get elected.

Our country is so bad off, a run-of-mill so-so surrender freedom slowly president just won’t do.

We need a GREAT president who will lead and actually cut back government.

Like it or not, only two potential nominees have ever actually reduced the size of government: Gary Johnson and Sarah Palin. I doubt Gary Johnson can win the nomination or defeat Obama.

Sarah Palin can win both.

A simple test:

A) Name the issues important to RINOs that are NOT embraced by The Tea Party.

B) Name the issues important to The Tea Party that are NOT embraced by RINOs.

No, purity gives a choice to the voter. It says ‘I think the other guy is wrong, and here's my opposing viewpoints’, vs agreeing, but just not wanting to go quite as far.

‘I love mandates’ Romney is more dangerous than Obama. Whereas Obama’s politically unsavvy, Romney will work his connections in government to push the liberal agenda forward.

So, Gov. Barber, I think you gave the wrong advice. You should have advised Republican candidates to campaign for Tea Party votes, and warned that taking them for granted will ensure a replacement party.

And yet, they somehow manage to find the “pure” RINO to nominate every time.

America is too deeply divided to ever think that a 3rd party can win. Those are just the facts and plain reality.

A 3rd party is a complete waste of time.

Dole, McCain, Romney... three strikes and you are out. My knees are still sensitive from the broken glass of '08, and there is no way I'm shredding them in '12 for another ticket-punching GOP chair moistener.

The communists Democrats party did it in NY and got a liberal elected. The third party candidate was a plant to divide the Republican vote. They will do this in the National election and it will work. We have no way to let the masses know that the Third Party is not a political party and do not have candidates.

Chihuhua Mitt:
”Now that my RomneyCARE/ObamaCARE
is law, and our beloved Obama has shown himself to be just wonderful,
supporting like me, global warming, ethanol supports, IAG/Sharia,
and fascism-by-stoke-of-our-pen,
a little self examination is in order
for you FReepers and Tea Party peasants.
You should now ask yourself
'if I had spent my time promoting
RomneyCare and Mitt Romney a lot earlier (like Ms. Bachmann),
could not I have garnered more support
of both our new national heroes,
pRes_ _ent Obama and Mitt Romney, today ?'

He’s preachin’ to the wrong crowd.

He needs to tell his establishment buddies to stop trying to force RINOs down our throats. That’s the way to avoid a third party.
