Ron Paul's VP Prospect?

NEW YORK (TheStreet ) -- If Ron Paul were to win the GOP presidential nomination, there's a chance he wouldn't have to worry about geographical balance on his ticket.

Paul, a Texas congressman and critic of the Federal Reserve, mentioned a former New Jersey judge and current Fox News talk show host -- Andrew Napolitano -- as a potential running mate, in an interview with TheStreet's Alix Steel in Washington this week.

Paul, though, did say he hadn't "thought it through."

Andrew Napolitano

Judge Napolitano is not only the author of books titled Constitutional Chaos: What Happens When The Government Breaks Its Own Laws, The Constitution in Exile: How the Federal Government Has Seized Power by Rewriting the Supreme Law of the Land, and Lies the Government Told You: Myth, Power, and Deception In American History, but he also has served as a New Jersey judge from 1987-95 and is currently a senior judicial analyst for Fox News and host of a libertarian-themed show on Fox Business News, Freedom Watch.

He taught constitutional law as an adjunct professor at Seton Hall Law School, and Paul has been a frequent guest on Freedom Watch, along with other free market thinkers like Peter Schiff.

Paul wrote the foreword for Lies the Government Told You, in which he said: "I am pleased to recommend this book to anyone who cares about the direction of this country and wants to understand how we got where we are, and what we need to do to regain our liberties."

Congressman Paul has railed against the Federal Reserve ever since he entered political life in 1976 and has repeatedly called it unconstitutional for the Fed to print money. Paul has called for interpreting the Constitution in a way that would support gold and silver as legal tender.

"What we participate here in Washington with the Fed is counterfeiting the money to subsidize wars and our welfare, and we're considered good politicians," argues Paul.

In the 2008 primary race, a potential Paul/Napolitano ticket was a hot item among libertarians.

Lew Rockwell, chairman of the Ludwig von Mises Institute in Alabama, promoted this partnership in the last election. The institute is a research and education center for libertarianism and the Austrian School of Economics. Popular themes are free trade, free market, balanced budgets and a gold standard.

Napolitano could not be reached for comment, but he has said in recent speeches and interviews that "there are so far few Ron Pauls in the government" and that it is "time to tame the federal beast."

So the small government guys are the nut jobs, and the big government Republicans like Romney, Pawlenty, and Gingrich are ok?

He won lots of straw polls and online polls in 2008 as well and it never gets him anywhere. His following is self-deluding by spamming online polls and filling up these straw polls so it gives them a false sense of reality- something that never translates to actual votes.

I dont think he needs to be concerened about who his running mate would be, he is not going to get there. He is someone who has built a small and enthusastic following and is getting them involved which is good. but, he is a nut job though not as much as the Dems have.

A few months ago Palin came in second on an online straw poll and it was breaking news here. We are talking key states straw polls.I am not defending Paul but I think it could be a good political discussion. I had a pre-conceived notion Paul was a truther and someone here months ago gave me a link that he was not. So is Paul’s NUTTINESS media spin because he wants to disown the UN or is he a nut?

“.....So is Paul’s NUTTINESS media spin because he wants to disown the UN or is he a nut?”

Some of it might be media spin, but much is self inflicted as well. And then there’s the real reason he’s considered a nut: his nutty followers. (Yes, I’m stereotyping here, but it’s ok since I am admitting it). His followers mostly seem to be young folks still living at home or in college who are obsessed with a single issue: which, depending on the person, is the Fed or legalization of drugs or getting us out of all foreign wars at all times for any reason.

And they have a childish need to get attention by exaggerating their impact at events (while normal people are at work) or online.

You hardly ever see a Ron Paul supporter who owns a business, has a traditional family, and is interested in a wide range of issues. I”m sure there are some, but it’s not typical.

Not nearly as nutty as his followers who actually believe he has a chance of becoming president.

Ron Paul's support is a mile deep but an inch wide. His enthusiastic supporters will generally overwhelm any straw poll but there are not enough of them to make any impact in a broader electoral situation. Ron Paul, once again, will not a serious player in any primary - he might finish third in a late primary because he holds on to the bitter end but even then he'll be third with about 1-2%.

Paul associates himself with Truthers and gives them credence by appearing constantly with nuts like Alex Jones (the father of the "Truther" movement). Is he a nut- I consider him an old career politician who has found a niche to keep his followers sending money and giving him attention. His followers have a response for everything. Is he a Truther? Of course not, they'll prove with a link. Of course, if you are on a 'Truther' forum, they'll provide you a link to show he is one of them. I'm not sure 'nut' is the right word although it is easy to see why he is labeled as such. He is a manipulative old career politician who talks a lot but accomplishes nothing. He has his followers repeating mantras like 'he has never voted for a tax increase' even though that is patently false. Heck, he voted for Pelosi's tax hike bill back in December.
