Jose Luis Hernandez is like many Daltonians.
Most of his family — brothers, uncles, nephews, cousins and even grandchildren — also call Dalton home. Hernandez has lived here for 13 years.
He has a steady job working construction. Before that he worked in local carpet mills.
Hernandez frequents the abundant shops along East Morris Street, supporting a slumping economy hit by sky-high unemployment.
For the past 10 years, he’s paid a mortgage on his home.
There’s a glaring difference, however, between Hernandez and most Dalton residents: He is an illegal immigrant.
Days before Georgia’s new immigration law — the Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act of 2011 — goes into effect on July 1, Hernandez fears his comfortable life in Dalton could end as quickly as the snap of handcuffs. But his concern is not focused solely on himself. He worries how the law will impact Hispanics here, the entire Dalton community and most importantly, his children.
“That is who it will affect the most,” Hernandez said through an interpreter while shopping at a Hispanic-owned bakery in East Dalton. “My son has a son born here. Imagine if they grab my son and take him. The law is also going to affect business people, banks. Many people buy homes without documents and carry on for more than eight, 10 or 12 years now paying the house and they are going to leave, and that will be the government left to deal with all that.”
The state Legislature overwhelmingly passed House Bill 87 last session. Gov. Nathan Deal signed the bill on May 13, saying there is “no better way to promote the quality of life of all who live here and no better way to protect taxpayers than upholding the rule of law.”

Did you hear about the Hispanic guy who was testifying in front of the Texas Legislature last week over the illegal bill? He spoke in Spanish and brought his English translor with him. He starte off with whining about being here since the 80's and blam! One senator jumped all over his case about not learning English in thirty years and it was an insult to us for him not speaking English and wouldn't let him continue. Woohoo! About time! Of course, as in this case, we never found out if he was an illegal.

A friend of mine who owned a construction company told me how his company and even he himself was put of of work by these guys. There was no way they could compete because the illegals don't have to pay certain things that they would. It was an unfair advantage to the illegals.
But also to the Legal Aliens, for the Illegals had advantages over them too.
It's been nutty in America for quite a while and I don't know why we put up with it with so many Millions of Americans out of work.
The solution is simple. Enforce computer checks and impose a fine of 10% on any company that knowingly hires even one illegal alien. And a fine of $500 dollars for any person hiring a known illegal alien.
They would leave in droves and put a stop to it real fast. The unemployed, like myself would love it very much. And it would bring in some badly needed revenue for the states. Because the states are running out of Unemployment funds.
I have ample paperwork proving my materal grandfather was a legal from Ireland (it was the UK when he emigrated), but I have no paperwork at all on paternal grandfather. My dad told us he was born in Canada and came into Michigan around the turn of the 20th Century. I suppose I could go Ancestry.com, but I don’t want to spend the money.

Had a friend who helped with a Catholic Church's youth group that had some problems and had to talk to the police only to find out that there are 36 Mexican gangs in Dalton or were 5 years ago.

Part of the illegal status problem is the fault of bastards like Ted'he's dead'Kennedy and the entire 'we need their labor' congress critters and businessmen. I have thought long and hard about it and have conversed with Mexicans over the issues, and I will tell you that if my family was on the verge of starvation living in Mexicao, constantly in danger of drug cartel wars and a totally corrupt government, I would look at the way the illegal immogration issues has been exploited by the democrats and rinos and make my way to where I could find work and an honest wage, even as an illegal immigrant.
Flame me if you wish, but until the Congress behaves in a manner indicating they want to stop the influx of illegals and the businesses using illegals can just take the hits, we have a problem we are encouraging.
When Congress appropriates the funds and writes the law to close the borders from illegal influx, and writes a means to citizenship for those illegals wanting to stay and be our fellow Americans, THEN we will have a measure of cooperation from the Hispanic communities all across America. The means to citizenship must be strict, must not give an illegal a headstart over those going by the law for citizenship, and must make allowance for minor members of families here illegally. When we do those things, then wwe can say 'If you don't want to obey our laws and don't want to become fellow citizens, then get the hell out of our country.'
We have been sending conflicting signals to people living on the edge of starvation. Time to step up and be honest with them and follow our own laws already on the books which address the illegal immigration issues.
I will bet you dollars to doughnuts that Jose was receiving taxpayer funded handouts because of the anchor baby. Of course the reporter would never ask about it.

as far as the Illegal buying a house don’t forget Banks were forced to accept matricula cards as id and could not refuse loans based on illegal status. Thank you Barney Frank

It's our leaders who put up with them. Not only are illegals cheaper, mainly because their costs are socialized, but they tolerate corruption from business and political leaders -- especially when they get entitlements.
As more people wanted to come to America (and the need for immigrants diminished), rules were put into place and became more and more complicated. My wife's grandparents got around it by immigrating from Italy to Puerto Rico, which got favorable treatment over immigrants from Italy.
Ted Kennedy's 1966 open borders law basically attempted to move America back to the pre-Castle Garden days to make amends to our alleged racism in the 1920-1950's era of giving preference to groups who had already proved themselves adept at assimilation into America. In reality, it gave preference to third worlders, particularly those close enough to sneak into America, at the expense of groups which had a track record of becoming good Americans.
