A mother who shocked America by drowning her five children in the bathtub may be freed by the end of the year, according to her lawyer.

Andrea Yates systematically murdered her children, aged between six months and seven years, at her suburban Clear Lake, Texas, home ten years ago today.

She then dialled 911 and told the first police officer who arrived at the house: 'I just killed my kids.'

Good grief. This thing killed children. I have no sympathy or compassion for anything of the sort. It is disgusting to see these excuses.

So if the mother were alive today, he would welcome her back?

I didn’t ask him, but wouldn’t you? IT WASN’T HER FAULT!!

What if your mother caused the death of others because she had a seizure while driving an automobile... would you rather that she died in the accident or that you would have her here with you?

Sheesh.

You are comparing an auto accident to purposeful drowning/murder?

And no, I would not accept a deranged murderer in the family.

“You are comparing an auto accident to purposeful drowning/murder?”

The comparison was that both were a medically induced tragedy. A seizure inducing a car accident equating to postpartum psychosis causing someone to do something they would never do normally.

And life sometimes teaches you to accept the things that you never thought you could accept. It’s called love.

she was actually in psychosis and as I understand it, they released her from the hospital against the wishes of her then husband....anyone getting HALDOL is not right in the mind.....this was truely an evil event, and I believe Satan works thru our human sicknesses, our perversions, our mental diseases, our addictions to do his evil work...

Executions are way, way underused. It is a crime that murderers, rapists, and child rapists are not executed. Every damn one of them. And not after 20 years of appeals.

So what if a murderer is “insane”.

So the crazy person had a spell of crazy and decided to kill children and that should be looked the same as a driver passing out at the wheel? I swear.

If a rabid dog spots you, corners you and leaps to chew out your throat, do you love on it while crushes neck or do you try to gouge it’s eyes out?

we had a guy, known for his aggressive driving, cross the highway, and hit a truck full of children and killed all 5 of them...

they were also beautiful, loved children...

that guy didn't serve a day...the jury acquited him because he claimed to have had a "coughing" seizure....

not a single day in jail....

A rabid dog? that really is a bizarre comparison.

Guess you will never understand or have empathy for someone who suffers from postpartum psychosis. Maybe I wouldn’t have empathy or understood either had it not happened in our family to a loving woman/mother... or to a friend who was hospitalized because of it.

I hope not.

Would I have the right to defend myself against a person suffering from a medically induced crazy spell?

If they don’t mean it and it is purely accidental, does this put me in legal jeopardy in your eyes?

Anyone who is mentally ill and kills someone should never be out on the street again. There is a big difference between the Kennedys lobotomizing their slightly retarded daughter and locking up someone who killed five people.

Locally, a 17 year old chopped up his grandfather with an ax.

Was the kid mentally ill?

Certainly.

Should he ever walk the streets as a free man?

No.

How so? It’s not the dog’s fault. It was sick in the head. Should I let it chew my throat or stroke it’s belly?

No comparison.

Now I’m sorry I got involved in this thread.

Hopefully, someone somewhere at least gets the message that a woman suffering from postpartum psychosis can do something that she would NEVER do if she were not ill. It is not her fault.

She left her oldest boy laying face down in a tub full of shit, urine and vomit because he didn’t go to the Lord easily. This is not indicative of psychosis, it is indicative of evil, the pure unadulterated kind.

Yes, she killed her children. But she was psychotic at the time, brought on by her postpartum psychosis.>>>>>>>

Totally irrelevant to me if she had postpartum psychosis. She should have been executed years ago. If someone with severe mental problems robbed a store or a bank I can see trying to understand their problem and getting them some treatment. But when you kill five people you don’t deserve to live any more. You are a proven demon

Maybe not totally her fault but enough her fault where she should be executed. Plenty of women have post partum depression and even psychosis but they don’t kill their own children. If Yates killed only one child perhaps execution would not be in order. But she killed all five of her offspring so crazy or not crazy she needs the death penalty.

It used to be executions were overused. Now they are underused. Where is the justice for the victim? Where is the compassion for the victims? If someone near and dear to me was murdered I know I would feel terrible until the killer was brought to justice and deprived of his own life. Same as he deprived my loved one of her or his life. Same as he deprived me of my loved one's love and presence

In such serious cases the scales of Justice remain unbalanced until the death sentence is carried out

You are correct. Depression is no excuse. Lots of people have it. Even at their lowest ebb, few of them are capable of murdering their own baby. Such an act goes against every instinct of a human being.

Many parents occasionally feel capable of doing harm to their children. Few do so. It’s unnatural, even for the mentally ill, to harm a child. Even hardened criminals will usually avoid doing harm to a baby or young child. No, it takes more than human weakness or garden-variety wickedness to make a person actually hurt or kill a child. It takes evil — pure, hellish evil.

The Devil may whisper in your ear, but one doesn’t have to listen to him. This woman listened. With that act of will she became a murderer. She had options. She could have run out of that house, called a neighbor, gotten on a bus to Mexico, and never come back. She could have gotten drunk. She could have walked next door and said, “Something is wrong in my head. I’m afraid I’m going to murder my children. Please call an ambulance.” Instead, she chose to kill them, one by one. Her own flesh and blood. Her own flesh and blood!

The fact that she wants to go on living is proof she has no soul. Any human being with a soul who had killed his or her own children would kill themselves. How could any rational being with a conscience live with that kind of guilt?

They couldn’t. Which means that Andrea Yates either has no conscience or is not a rational being. If she is no longer a rational being, she should be put out of her misery. If she has no conscience, she should be put out of ours.
