A passenger jet crash-landed Monday on a desolate stretch of road in northwest Russia, killing at least 38 people, the countrys state news agency reported. The plane reportedly took off from Moscow and contained 48 passengers and five crewmembers.
It is unclear what brought the plane down about 2 miles from Petrozavodsk airport, its destination, reported Itar-Tass. But the Tupolev-134 plane caught fire and the fuselage was reportedly completely destroyed.
Those injured were considered in serious condition.
Authorities began an investigation into the crash; early signs point to a mechanical error, Itar-Tass reported, citing a source.

It seems like translated too straight.
Mechanical error = mechanics’ error (skipping maintenance procedure etc).
To: headstamp 2
Their designs are "foreign-looking" in part because of the relatively primitive airport facilities in the CCCP.
Notice the four wheeled main gear trucks; . . .the 134 was designed to operate from unpaved runways.
And the anhedral wings obviate the need of a yaw damper system.

. . . . . a definitive image of anhedral:

"Mechanical error" in Russia translates into "the mechanics decided on an early drinking binge and forgot/neglected to do necessary repairs."
You could not get me on a Russian built or maintained aircraft at gunpoint.

"...mechanical error..." The article seems to have been edited, I've failed to find the word "mechanical" on the page the link points.

The injured will be taken to Moscow by an IL-76 carrying 15 doctors and 5 psychologists to take care of the injured. Good thing they brought along psychologists. Might as well work on those hang-ups while having third degree burns dressed.

Good thing they brought along psychologists. AFAIK, that's a routine procedure in the Russian Emergencies' Ministry.

Sounds like a plum government job. What do they do in the mean time? I guess they are like firemen here who go to every accident, fire or not.

This ministry is a federal agency responsible for handling all types of disaster whether natural or man-made. (There are provincial and municipal forces too). In meantime they do inspection (fire regulations, policing small boats' traffic, etc.), maintain bomb-shelters...
